tranny works part time

tranny trouble

New member
hi, im new , bought a 97 gtp yesterday ,knowing there was a problem, tranny whines and slips, and then the next thing you know it works perfectly, is there a sensor or a simple fix to problem before spending on new tranny, previous owner said it just started, but yea i can shut car down and restart it and tranny performs great with no whinning, then it will just go south on me ??? help ! also need to know what tranny i have , is it the 4t65e, this car is turbo charged., or would it have the 4t65e-hd???

Your car isn't turbo charged it's supercharged. A change in the fluid and filter would probably do wonders for your car. It's probably got worn out fluid and when it gets hot it gets really thin and makes your trans not work right. Also you have the hd trans

I second the fluid / filter change... But you better do it soon, you keep slipping that trans, your going to burn the bands, and you will be replacing it sooner rather then later.

I wish I had gotten my $.02 in on that thread, that was just epic.

You've got my vote on full syn, imo it shifts better, and synthetics are known for longevity, and durability and have a higher heat resistance.

ok i picked up lucus senthetic blend oil , a filter and a jug of lucus stop slip, i also read a code , it was po742,torque converter clutch solenoid circut stuck on, i will change every thing out once it warms up in hopes that because it seems to work fine some times that it will clean it up inside and work again,,, or am i just being hopefull and will have same problem down the road, ??/ should i spend the money and get all sensors and switches , solinoids changed out,? if i do what dollars am i looking at??

also need to know if a 4t65e from a 2000 gt will bolt and hold up in place of a 4t65e-hd, a guy has one for sale with 95000 miles on it, 700.00 OBO ??

Thats kinda high for a non HD tranny. Will it work ? YES. Will you have to get a custom tune due to gearing change YES. The HD trans have 2.93 gears, the Non-HD trans's have 3.29 gears. IE you're going to have to change parameters in the PCM to account for this change. That could be pricey if you don't know a fellow GP'er with a tuner.

Depends on if he wants the 3.29's and is comfortable working on trans's. Me personally...I'd love to have 3.29's and I know tuners ;)

ok, im convinced, will stick with the HD,now should i go ahead with the oil and filter change and see if this helps with code or have a shop replace needed tcc and other solenoids to make it dependable??

anytime..

My searching ability comes from having oddball problems that most forums have never come across in the past. So I am frequently on my own.

well changed oil, filter, and added lucus no slip, fired up and sounded nice , whinning gone, let it warm and checked level, went for drive, no slip but seem to have to let up for a shift sometime, hopeing it comes around, got a growling noise at 30 kls and up , i am hopeing it is a wheel bearing , while i had the front end up i checked for bearing movement, passenger side was good drivers side had movement, first time down the road at that speed so im quessing bearing, stick i in neutral at a higher speed and noise seems not to change, thanks for the info boys, will keep ya posted.

I hope everything works out for you. The for the bearing you have to do the hub assembly, but it should take you less then an hour. I had to do the left one twice in the last six months, I think I've got it down to about 40 minutes.
