ok my rack took a dump on me, and im looking to replace it, i did the p/s pump already and its not much better than it was , very hard to turn left and rights not much better, have any of you went the cheap way and bought a reman rack off ebay? i found this place from Detroit, Axle of Dearborn any of you mid west guys ever use or hear of them? Complete Steering Rack and Pinion + NEW OUTER TIE RODS | eBay they have good feed back and sell stuff like crazy, and this rack has inner and outer tie rods for 100 bucks.

ive never done a rack before, so the 60 dollar from a store p/s box days are over, all the stores want a arm and a leg for for a new or reman rack.

what do you guys think? will i be doing the rack again in 6 months? it just seems to good to be worth it in the long run but you never know.

I've done two JY racks and not had any issues. I think they ran me $40 complete. (delivered actually)

Easy way to replace it is to drop the cradle slightly.

i also have a friend who has a friend, who runs a towing co, and he tows in wreaks, if they get totaled from the ins co. he lets friend take parts off them for next to nothing, i gave him a list of compatible cars yesterday, so im hopping for that route too, ill have to call a few junk yards, im just scared of using a used rack if ya know what i mean.

if i go the JY route what do you recommend doing to the rack to prep it, flush old fluid or anything else?

I put a jy rack in and it leaked like hell and the jy didn't get back with me for 2 days so i'm done going there. I got one from autozone and it's fine so far.

thats what im scared of, but ive been told by ppl i know to check the fluid of the jy rack and see if its clear and not like black tar, if its all nasty looking its on its way too or shot. most places throw ya a 30 day warranty so idk what to do... decisions, decisions....

How many times do you want to replace it? If the answer is once, then I'd buy a reman over the jy unit. Not to say that you can't get a nice one from the yard but its up to you. I know BB has had luck w/ jy racks, while others haven't. Your call boss.

That's the case with so many things.

Motors, transmissions ... basically any used mechanical part. For the lower price, we make that sacrifice that it might not be very good. It's not as though most salvage yards can test things well. For example if the car is totaled and won't drive, how do they test the tranmission? It goes into gear, yep...that's a good one. Uh..maybe?

I need to replace my rack and pinion also. Would replacing the rack and pinion when I do my speed daddy headers make it easier to install headers? Also what is a good brand for a rack and pinion?

Exhaust really isn't in the way, but I don't see why it wouldn't hurt to have extra room. May be able to get to the lines on the rack easier this way.

As far as a brand, I was told to stick w/ OEM, but I'm sure someone else has used a different brand. The only reason I went w/ OEM is because I found an OEM Magnasteer equipped rack for the same price as an off-brand reman.
