• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

This is why you go with a roller timing chain.

Don't base important decisions regarding your engine on conjecture.
You're welcome!

I feel there are other factors at play here... I personally know a few people running cams with stock style chains that have far more miles on them then that.

Shawn Mayes even got 20k out of his dampener with a "stock" chain with 130\90 spring setup.

I thought you didnt need a damper with the single or double rollers? Or does running it just give you a little extra safety?

Nice pictures, I've been interested in this stuff for a while as I see many singles on higher than stock springs as well. I've had the pleasure of pulling about 10 or so modded motors and had the chance to see the dampeners on singles and doubles.

Singles, I've seen them come out similar to the pics above and Anthony's mention of shattering a dampener and it wiping out a motor (last swap I did for a guy was a shattered and wiped out). Then you have the other side where the dampener looks great after 40K+ miles on the higher rate springs.

Doubles, Ok as a community we have learned that the double roller is not intended for our US 3800, and that the chamfer can be corrected to fix this, as well as machining the cam gear. Let's throw on a milled oil pump cover for good measure as well. Oddly enough I see those milled covers, with the correct chamfer and machined cam gear motors still rubbing the pump cover a little.

While the double is clearly stronger, I have reserve feelings when seeing even a well clearanced DR still rubbing the pump cover. My thought is.. this platform isn't the best one to mod.

BTW, Title is interesting, do you mean double roller?

the later aftermarket dampers/tensioners that are a solid drab grey without molding swirls tend to be more durable than the swirl dampers that chip apart along the striations...

always run a new set oem/cloyes gears and chain

a new chain on worn powdered metal gears has too much slack

broke an oem chain with 105's on a VS...wasnt pretty

double roller properly machined is bestest
