Thinking about a Tranny Cooler, what do you guys have...

I actually have the oversized radiator, gmpp cooler and the zzp aluminum tranny pan. I bought all these trying to fix a overheating problem after all that, i found out it was just a value in the bin that was causing the tc to not lock up and that was why it was overheating. Anyways so now i have triple tranny cooling measures.

The gmpp is after the oversized radiator, and when I bring the car out in the spring it takes a long time for the tranny to heat up to optimal temps for beating on it. However in 90-100 degree weather the temps don't skyrocket when sitting in traffic.

I remember a few winters ago, I'd let the car idle a while before taking out on cold winter mornings. Memphis got down as cold as 9* overnight, so it was fairly chilly. Driving the car, it wouldn't use any lockup and I thought something was wrong, but it'd lockup after a while. I figured something in the programming left it unlocked so the TC would act as a heater and bring it up to a more desirable temp. I didn't have a scangauge then, so I can't really tell you what temp it did this.

Personally I would not want it down below 160*. Condesation/Moisture is not as big of a problem in the tranny as it is in the engine and you dont get fuel dilution in the tranny, but Id still want it between 160 - 180* just so that any moisture in there would evaporate fairly easily instead of attacking the fluid.

Dont quote me on this and Trannyman would better be able to clear this up than I, but I was under the impression that if the tranny fluid was too cold the computer would lock out overdrive. Again, Ive heard of this and I dont know this to be fact. Im not the tranny expert here so it may all be junk too.

I know, when I leave work, I get right on the highway. If my tranny temps are below 77°F, it will not lock up the TC. Can't say if all cars are that way. But mine is.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm thinking about just buying the GMPP cooler and calling it good. How I see it many run high stalls and no cooler at all so at least i'm benefiting somewhat. Ya know? Besides, I don't want to run the tranny too cold either. The TC not locking up in the colder months worries me somewhat. I also like the mounting on the GMPP. Should work well behind my FMHE. And I already have a oversized radiator too so i'm benefitting a little bit already there too...
