• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Thermostat Curiosity

these cars are designed to be cooled by the air while driving really well, my car has a stock t stat in it and never hits operating temperature unless im driving ovver 30miles typically. ive gone weeks without the t stat ever opening up and me driving it every day

VW GTP.

Must be.

i dont think its stuck open the 3 other GPs me and my friends have had are exactly the same. also doesnt matter car runs fine

I think the temperature gauge is just fooling you. Using scanning software with access to sensor data, I can tell you that it takes just a few miles for my GTP to get up to operating temperature. The temperature gauge has always read much cooler than the coolant actually is. I have no idea if there is actually a way to calibrate the needle to read closer to accurately.

I suppose a reasonable compromise would be to keep the 195 in, and have a friend or shop with tuner software change the fan settings. You could set both fans to kick on at 210* if you really wanted to.

Like I said, 195 and 180 are both reasonable.

I can vouch for that. I have an OBD scanner that i run from time to time. Each notch varies by no more than 2-3 degrees. i.e. First line after first big line for me can be either 183 or 185, just a matter of the dash recieving the latest PCM data.

to asite57: our engines are way too big and compact to efficiently air cool, i think your friends have stuck stats. If its really cold, you might get to stat temp, but then fall quite dramatically.

its really just something that doesnt worry me, im not saying im right and you all are wrong i could be wrong i havent had the scanner up to my car in a while and really i never payed that close attention to the OBDII numbers, it hasnt over heated so its fine
