The Big Bad Brake Thread

Gen5 SS front brakes dont need adapter plates to bolt to a Wbody though. ZZP is using the Camaro SS rear calipers for some reason, probably because they are a little smaller and thinner so....easier to fit behind wheels. Rockauto says the rear rotor on a gen5 SS is 365mm or 14.37in so Im not sure why they paired it to the 13.6" rotor in thier kit. Obviously its a OEM for something with the same wheel bolt pattern, the right rotor offset and the right thickness.

I'm getting ready to start assembling parts for the f-body upgrade for my 01 GT.

I was looking at ZZP's F-body aluminum caliper kit. I'd love to lose 10 lbs of ugly fat, but their price is painful.
They also claim, "We are now using calipers from GM that have the correct 14mm mounting bolts in them. This means that your F-body kit will use the same factory bolts as your stock caliper."

So what calipers/brackets are they using, from what car(s)? Are they selling GXP calipers with F-body rotors?

They are likely full of ****. Probably just drilling them out and tapping them to accept the stock bolt like most of us do anyway. My setup consists of a slotted rotor/ceramic pad set from eBay for a 2000 camaro ss for $100 and a set of used fbody calipers off eBay for $75. Drill and tap the holes. Bend the stock brake line bracket out an inch or so to reach. Done...$200/2hrs

news flash all F bodys calipers are AL. ZZP just makes sound like theres are better then junk yard calipers.

find a junk yard 98-02 camaro or firebird, take its brackets and calipers. same thing.

Yeah, I figured that out pretty quickly. Are theirs new at least? Or reman like I can find anywhere much cheaper? $250 isn't completely ridiculous if they're new.

I'm beginning to suspect you are right. The picture sure looks like f-body calipers & brackets. If that's the case, they aren't being completely honest.

Tapping 4 fairly big holes with hand tools I'd have to buy is not my preference, anyone sell the brackets pre-tapped?

Well lookie there. It's great they got all the parts searching done but man do they forget how old these cars. Some W-body's arent even worth $700.lol
I can understand a little mark up.

Interesting. Might as well stick with the GXP brakes. Is a little over half a inch going to make a difference.

You don't need to tap them just run the sleeves

GXP are 12.7 not a full 13inch, however weight remains the same by using the camaro rotor with a diamater of 13.6.....seems like a pretty good package in that regard

And it's not all about the rotor size at that point. Billet 4 piston 2 piece caliper > cast alum. 2 piston

however if I was going to bother with spending the cash and doing a brembo setup and finding wheels that cleared them I would damn sure just be going for the full size front SS/ctsV calipers and 14" gt500 rotors

Honestly it's still a GP no matter what brakes you put on it. I'm very happy with the GXP fronts I did, more than enough stopping power for the streets.

I'm more than happy with my C5 front and GXP rear.. Although these CTS-V would look so good behind my wheels...

Yes, brake upgrades for looks and nothing more.

This seriously what has become of this platform? If so, why has no one run two piece rotors yet? They're super race-car.

All a W body needs is 12" rotors and some good pads. Stoptech streets are my new favourite.

After contacting them, they are remanufactured, and they want $100 for the brackets alone, i.e. get lost. Guess I will buy my exhaust elsewhere.

Meanwhile every piece I need is available on Amazon for a grand total of about $190 and no cores.

Go Fast not broke right????? now you know why i dis like them so much.

I bought some rotors off of ebay and they were pretty cheap, they warped after a few months, then I found LUK Schaffer Brake rotors on sports brake rotors and I have couldn’t be happier. I got a set of BLACK XD Brakes and installed them on my Pontiac Grand Prix and they're simply amazing.

Hey folks-just a question. I've done many front brakes on cars without ABS,but we have an 06 base GP (w/ABS) and was wondering when I go to change them on the GP, when I retract the caliper,do I have to open the bleeder to release fluid so I don't push it back through the ABS unit,or just compress it like a car without ABS? The YouTube videos I watched didn't mention anything special to do,and a few people I've asked weren't sure. Need to do the fronts first(making oise),but rears won't be far behind-pads getting thin on them.
