Stupid ball joint!!

Never done a CV on a Grand Prix before, but I can tell you there is not near enough room to do it that way on the majority of cars.

To all who posted on this thread lesson learned... I got it on. And as far as reading more most all video's on youtube say to take off the ball joint. If I ever have to change it again I know. Thank you all for the help.. save me some money

All the people that remove the strut to knuckle bolts are rookies.

Its a breeze doing it the ball joint way when you actually know how to man handle a pry bar.

I have actually had really good luck on my car. The only two times I have had issues getting stuff apart was my stock tie rod ends (Would just spin when I tried to take the nut off so I just cut them off sincce I was changing them anyways) and the bolts between the cat back exhaust and the downpipe (Cut them off and drilled them out, sucked)

I've always popped the ball joint. Hence the write up saying to pop the joint. However in the art of learning something new each say.. I'm keeping this in my mind and going to try it next axle I need to replace.

Yeah you should not have to remove the ball joint, strut or tie-rod to change the cv, just turn the wheel and pop out the transmission side first.

I'll spray some lube in there if it's tight. Not popping the balljoint is quicker.

FWIW though on you guys that do the strut to knuckle bolts, you need an aligment after doing that. Balljoint is a fixed position, no alignment needed. That's why most places do it that way.

Hey bill I did mine last month on drivers side. I took the strut to knuckle bolts off (bear in mind as we all know I'm a rookie) and didn't need an alignment.

Haha I did it on my passenger side over 5k miles ago and the wear is even on the directional tires ;) so I got lucky twice?
