Steering wheel controls, wire too short? (pic)

I was replacing the steering wheel controls in my 99 GTP, what what I gathered you just pry it up and then have just enough space (one inch?) to disconnect the connector. This isn't what I found when I removed mine, the cable is very short and doesn't extend beyond the wheel. Probably lucky I didn't rip the end off when I removed it, there doesn't seem to be an slack in the cable. I'm wondering if my cable is perhaps pinched and shorter than it should be? I couldn't find any good pictures. If I remove my airbag I think I may be able to fix it? It doesn't seem to be possible to reconnect the switch atm. The connector won't extend out any further than in the pic

How do you connect them? When I get my switch low enough into the wheel the connector touch the switch the hole is fully filled by the switch so I can't nudge it into place with a screwdriver

A quick follow-up, the left side is definitely too short to re-install. I took out the right side and cable reached just up to the top of the wheel where the other is well below.

Normal?

Pinched/short?
