It went good. Had a few little things pop up from time to time. The only reason I rebuilt over getting a junkyard motor is because I have a friend that works at a machine shop. If I had paid for all the necessary machine work to get everything back into spec it would have been $1200 just for that.

Whats up with yours what are you plans? Do you have a thread going on it?
 


I bought a used engine and trans for $400. I cleaned up the used motor and bolted it to my engine stand. Took off lower intake and found the plastic gasket in real bad shape (no surprise) didn't look like water was leaking into engine yet, ,there wasn't any milky sludge anywhere at least. spun it upside down and took off pan. popped a couple rod bearings off and found pretty good gouge down the center of both bearings that I looked at. Now I'm not sure what to do, reading all the post about how 3800 don't take to just putting new bearings and rings in very good. Don't really have the money for $1200 machine shop bill on top of all the parts right now. I might try my luck at another used engine again. Not sure. I bought this car for my daughter a couple months ago, didn't get lucky this time. lol. No I don't have a thread going yet. Thanks.
 
Well my machine work was on the extreme side i had just about everything done. So the $1200 is on the way high side.

I say grab another short block and dont mess with the bottom end and pistons. Before my 02 build i had a 98 that i built with an s1x cam 3.0mps and supporting mods. The bottom end had almost 160k on it. I put 26k on it then got in a 26 car wreck in Milwaukee and it was totaled out but it ran great even with the high mile stock bottom.
 
Where did you get your parts? I just got a quote from a machine shop her for cleaning up heads, mill surface and grinding valves. boring cylinders if needed, grind crank if needed, hot tank, cam bearings,all the plugs. for $825.00. they dont have any line boring equipment though. Is that a total neccessity? The guy looked up a rebuild kit that includes everything from pistons cam timing set, lifters gaskets oil pump kit whatever else I might be forgetting. and the price there was $1,492.00 ouch. Do you have a line on cheaper rebuild kit?
 
I just got a l26 engineoff of ebay 400 shipped to me with only 43k on it. Seems way easier imo...cam, topswap, gasketsand crap will be going.in mine for under 800 total and done.
 


i got this one pretty much for the cost of gas, heads are in the box. only things i plan on reusing is my balancer, the sc pulleys and the blower.

its also get the full re gasket treatment.

i cant wait for it to warm up so i can get to working on it. im also cleaning up the heads, diy port job. not taking anything but the lumps out and or smoothing things over a bit. also gonna lap the valves since they are coming out.
 
My motor comes friday, got a little heater in garage to start disasembling and putting.all the go fast stuff on. I was thinking about smoothing.out the heads as well...big part for.me is throwing a 300m, harden 4th gear, 7/8ths chain, shift kit, and some valave body parts from tep into the trans while its all out. I want mine back running in 30days..we shall see but thats a sweet score for you!

right now we are in the process of running electricity, insulating and then 5/8 sheet rock in my friends garage where im keeping the engine.

we cleared two long wals of everything on them, two large shelves that went around the whole damn garage, they were filled to stuff falling off. the new plan is to add a real shop heater, and a/c for the summer. should make working on stuff much nicer down the road.

That would be sweet. I was gonna do something like that to my garage, but getting transferred soon to fla. for work so wont need any of that. And can work year round now on the old w`s. You gonna clean up your heads with a dremel?
 
think im gonna get a die grinder, and use a drill as well. im just cleaning up the castings really. theres a how to here. and ive been watching a few vids. if your just cleaning stuff up you really cant hurt them. unless you hit valve seat, or the guides.
