spark plug wires

Destroys cars
Ive tryed to get my freaking spark plug wires off now for 2 hours I managed to get the #5 cylinder wire . I have tryed yanking on them with pliers and everything. I cannot get them off and its starting to well lets just say I wana blow it up. Is there anything special you have to do to get them off ??

thanx for the info might have to stop by autozone to see if they have the tool b/c ive tryed twisting and pulling lol

Matt hit it on the head; twist them first to break the seal. And if the seal doesn’t break, twist and pull at the same time. Another trick I use is to get in deep and leverage off of the exhaust manifold with my palm.

Yeh I tryed all that the tip of the wire is almost welded to the plug I yanked on the #3 cylinder boot so hard I pulled the boot off the wire. Just gunna pull em till they break and get a hole new set of wires. I have no other choice. At least its only $24 for a new set of plugs

Yeh I picked some up when I got a pair of boot pullers from auto zone. Ill just have to wait till tomorrow to get the new wires almost time for me to go to work. I should replace the wires anyway I was just hoping to get another 15k out of them b4 I replaced. Oh well tho maby ill have stock hp back lol. Used to be able to smoke the tires if I was WOT from stop now not so much

Wow, all that Chicago stop and go like h#!! driving probably gets your engine super hot in the summer welding those puppies on. I replaced my wires at 40K, and I took out my fire starter POS wire holder at the same time. :th_lightbulb:

You talking about the plastic part that hold the front wires close to the engine or the 3wire small clip?

holds oil leaking from the valve cover then it spills out and sits between the exhaust manifold and the aluminum cover then turn the car off and 10 mins later, it bursts into flames.

KABOOM

ok, i get the thing with the plastic holders, with the metal retainer, can you just remove it when you replace spark plug wires? I'm gonna get the MSD 8.5mm wires, so the boots should stay on more than well enough that that metal piece isn't needed right? would that metal piece even fit correctly anymore with the MSD Wires?

why would a metal retainer be bound to start a fire?

It isn’t made of metal, it is just a big piece of plastic with the front plug wires running threw it. I forget the technical name for it. I removed it because apparently it got removed on certain models because it is part of a fire hazard. I’m sure my GP won’t start on fire, but I took it out anyway because it is useless and in the way when using after market plug wires.

Well, to remove it you need to remove the left side dog bone. And then remove the vertical mount support thingy. (ya I know I’m not a mechanic!) The parts you need to remove are obvious once you look at it. The BIG TIP in getting it out is there is a “secret” clip holding the POS in place on the left side. Just reach down and pull the clip away from the valve cover, and it will come out with zero force.

And the “metal piece” you’re talking about, do you mean the boot heat shields? If so, yes, I re-used them. Do you need them? Maybe not. But they are a good piece of assurance you don’t melt down a boot.:th_thumbsup-wink:

Yeh my car has the covers on the boots. It might of stuck em on there so tight b/c im always going 90 in my car everywhere I go lol.
