spare tire question

I have an extra goodyear tire that is sitting in my garage that isnt that bad of a tire and i was thinking about using it as a spare. will I be able to get a full sized tire to fit in that little hole for the spare tire? If it will im on the hunt for one of the stock 5 spoke rims

I think it would be higher, but if you were a little creative with some 2x4's and plywood you could create a platform which would go over the spare and give you a level trunk, but you need to measure the diameter of the tire/rim and the spare area to make sure there is room to drop the full sized one in. I have 2 extra rims that are a little bent but more than good enough for a spare and will be in the Audubon area at Christmas.

ya the only problem with raising the floor of my trunk is that ive got a sub box in there that i made as tall as i could with out it hitting the top of the trunk. is it the hunny comb rim or the 5 spoke ones you got?

Well, never done it but as mentioned check diameter to see if the tire will drop in. From there it will prolly be too "tall" to have a level trunk but with some plywood u could raise the section above the tire. I know in the 2001-2002 taurus they could be had with a full spare from the factory and that is what was done, the section above the tire was raised ooo about 1-2 inches I guess to accomodate the full spare. Not sure how much space ur system takes but that is the only way to do it without raising the whole trunk floor.

just let the air of the tire so you can make it fit better. A deflated tire takes up less space. LOL

haha nice. id try and just drop it in my car like i should have as soon as i got this idea but i cant now since im supposed to get 12 to 14 inches of snow tonight.....this sucks

it will definitely be too wide (tall laying down) to fit flush under the rear cover. The cover rests on the donut as it is so a full size spare will definitely not fit. The diameter may work but the width of the full size rim/tire wont fit.

My gf has an 02 GT with a sub box in the trunk so I know it'll be a tight squeeze...

ya i can tell all ready that this is going to turn into a summer project since im probbly going to have to make a new sub box inorder to make this work. i think it is a good idea to have a full size spare opposed to a donut though dont you?

well a donut is sufficient as a temporary "fix" to get you to where you need to go, and to get the tire replaced ASAP. A full size spare is nice since you wont have to worry about driving at higher rates of speed (above 50) for a prolonged period of time, and there's no real rush to get to a shop to have the old tire replaced. It's definitely more convenient and worry free to have a full size spare over a donut as long as it will fit.... It may be more of a hassel than it's worth to get in the trunk nicely, but in the long run it would be nice if you're ever far from home and need a spare.

thats kinda what i was thinking but if it does become to much work to get this done im just gona say f*ck it and just have an extra tire
