Well i just bought a new to me GTP (RED 4dr) on monday for $1300 and 163k miles, with a couple leaks and no SC belt :/. I cleaned the engine off and noticed that an oil drip i saw on the ground was coming from my rear valve cover. Too easy, will change that gasket along with the LIM gasket. Guy who sold it to me also said it goes through power steering fluid so i need to hunt that down. But one thing i don't know is that when the car is going 20-40 mph and steering is in nuetral position there is a rattling/clunking around that goes away as soon as i start steering left or right. Seems like something is loose down there and is tightened up when the rods pull it left or right.

Any idea where I should start looking? I initially thought it was the CV axle but that would be more prominent with turning i would imagine, not just when going in a straight line. Its no better or worse when speeding up or slowing down.
 


Tie rods, rack, swaybar (as mentioned), lower control arms could all be suspect. Time to jack the front end up and push/pull and visually inspect it all. The loss of PS fluid could be the rack itself leaking.
 


Think my biggest hurdle is the complete lack of a flat surface to park on and the 45 minutes of daylight after fighting Atlanta traffic after work.

Currently at my brother's house until I get an apartment and my family moved from Augusta to Atlanta.

So I go home every weekend and still need to register and insure the car. So no driving it home on the weekend yet to work on it.

What I wouldn't give for a lift to put big red on
 
Ok rotated tires and have everything a really good tug while the wheels were off... Nothing lose. Tire wasn't the problem noise is still there all connections are tight, no dry rot on any boots and bushings look good. Where the hell could this be coming from? Def need new rotors tho, mine are grooved pretty bad. Can CV axle be hosed and all boots be perfect?
 
Yep, sure can. I snapped my pass. side axle earlier this year and it didn't have a torn boot before it broke. Replace both rotors and see what you get.
 


Yeah it's just weird that the knock knock knock is only when going straight from 20-40 mph. Like something is banging back and forth
 
I shake the down front ends with the tires still on. Only way to see if tie rods or beraings are loose. Unless it's about to fall out bad.

Without the car at my finger tips I can't really say what it going on.
 
Yeah I hate it, but plus side... Everything I replace will be better than stock. So if I can't find it, it will only handle better and better lol
 
Well I think I found the problem.

Could shake the wheel back and forth with about an inch of play and loud clunking
 
time for outer tie rods.

crack the lock nut free on the rod, then take the castle nut off and cotter pin, then with a hammer hit the flat part at the end of the knuckle, the joint will pop free with a few good hits.

leave the lock nut in place, remove the old ends, turn the new ends back on the rod tot he old lock nut, snug it up.

you'll need an alignment but it will be close if you dont move the lock nut.
 


id get the better moogs. or a name brand before them real cheap o's. you want them to last. make sure the new ones have a grease fitting, and you grease them when installed.
 
Not much better.

Get one with a grease zerk is my own request.

And that looks like a factory tie rod end, so there won't be an cotter pin as it's a nylon locking nut.
