• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

So, how much trouble am I in?

Was driving around tonight and suddenly the car felt and sounded like it was missing. Drove it home and on the way my check engine light came on, and the red oil light would come and go intermittently. I brought it home to take a video of the noise, and now I've got this knocking noise. The missing/sputtering seems to be gone, but this doesn't look good for me...

lol we told ya in the chat! Rod bearing or the valve spring broke and the valve is slapping the piston.

something definately is screwed up in there. you'd be surprised what it could be. i bought a jeep for 200 bucks one time cuz it sounded like that. come to find out he had sludge build up cuz of the lack of oil changes on time. its also from the lack of oil pressure. the push rod heated up so bad that it literally burned a hole through one of the rocker arms.

i'm assuming that in the chat they told you to check ur oil and u did and its good? lol

I changed the oil a few days ago, and didn't see anything amiss. Pulled the dipstick and didn't see any shavings or anything, though it is dark. I will look again tomorrow. Frankly I'm terrified right now. I'm pretty broke, with the mugging in December and all, and this is my only car.

Pull the dipstick and put it under bright light and look very close for tiny "glitter". Its gonna be like glitter powder and not actual "shavings"

That's about what my mom and dads venture sounded like when they bought it i changed the oil and added a bottle of lucas oil treatment and now it's quiet as a mouse.

OMG it's dead and about to blow up, I'll buy it for $200.00 and save you and your family from disaster!! :D lol

It's in the valve train: broken spring, broken retainer/guide, bent pushrod, dead lifter.

I changed intake gaskets on a 3100 about 7-8 months ago and it started making noise like that about a week afterwards.. I figured to much coolant got into the oil and it was a rod, but I put my hand on the intake and it felt like something punching back.. LOL Took the valve covers back off to find a guide broke and rod bent. Dunno why, luck of the draw, it warped when I took it off and stressed it when I put it back (since the valve train has to come off of those motors) dunno, but it sounded exactly like that. Take your valve covers off and see if you see/feel anything lose..

.

This was my first instinct as well... if it was in the bottom end, it'd be a lot louder and more erratic. This one hits every time like clockwork at a steady volume.

Got it up on a lift, turns oil my oil pump exploded. If you pored oil in while you ran it, it literally shot out the side in spurts like a heartbeat. Got that replaced and filled it up, purrs like a kitten now. Might have dodged a bullet on this one!
