Scored crankshaft after gasket replacement?

This is the only post ill put in this thread. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU SPEND 2K to put gaskets on a engine with almost 200K miles on it!!!.......................

I'm thinking they didn't do the proper procedures and got coolant in the oil, and probably worse yet ran it with the same oil. Could have also improperly installed the gasket or manifolds and it leaked coolant into oil.. I would check oil really careful and have a good look around for evidence of coolant in the oil or any other containment.

Unfortunately, they removed all the oil to check the engine so now I won't be able to check this or have another mechanic check it for me. Unless they held onto the oil.... I'll definitely ask tomorrow.
 
Where on the crank were you feeling? Can you describe what you saw/felt in your own words a little more.

When the timing cover is on.. there's barely any crank to see/touch. The balancer is known to get a groove worn in it where the seal rides. That often doesn't reseal with a new seal until it runs a while and cleans it's own groove or something like this is considered

I can't imagine anything that you saw/touched that would have caused an issue like overheating etc. Typically that would be an air bubble based on someone not burping the system fully/or it being airbound. I've seen this and it's caused a similar issue as you mention.

They removed the oil pan and the connecting rod cap. Where the cap connects to the crankshaft is where I felt the scoring. The shop called me in to feel this so that I knew what they were talking about. I could feel the scoring with my finger nail and mechanic said that was way too much. I could even see the scoring if I remember correctly.

Basically the gaskets were replaced and I drove 3 hours before the motor quit. Had it towed back to the shop. They removed the oil pan and cap and found the scoring, then called me in to see it.

On a side note, my father in-law who ran a shop for 30 years immediately said they did something wrong, likely with the intake gasket, which caused coolant to mix with the oil. This would account for the rising temp I saw while driving in the city if there was coolant in the oil.

No like bill said they most likely didn't bleed the coolant system. Coolant in your oil would have no effect on the cooling system unless the coolant was leaking into your oil do to an improper gasket install.

Lifted the lim, poored coolant in the lifter valley, scrapped heads, sent messy particles in the lifter valley, didn't clean the valley with a pint of oil. Only did an oil change while changing oil pan gasket, messed something up there. It's how I killed my first engine and how I learnt to properly clean/wash/prevent making a mess the other times I did it, drove 160km after gasket replacement and bam, rod knock.

That sounds like another possibility. I got about 300km before the engine quit. Since they did the oil pan, intake, and timing cover gasket at the same time it seems there are many ways they could have messed up and caused coolant to enter the oil. My father in-law says they should have insurance for mistakes like this. I sure hope they do.
 


Shops fault. Simple as that. I usually do two oil changes after a lim gasket and clean up every surface before putting a gasket plus adding RTV to it. You would be surprised how much coolant is in the oil even after a 1-2 oil changes.
 
i did my lim gaskets and split no coolant, so no oil change after the lim job or rinsing the lifter valley out at all.

that was last year and 2 oil changes later. still runs.


sounds like you will be shopping for a a used engine to swap in there. the shop will flake out on you, count on it.

The problem is with the rod bearing just like you said. The bearings overlapped, or spun and scored the crank. They are saying its pre-existing and that they did nothing wrong. They have insurance, but the shop owner says since they did nothing wrong he's not going to use it.

I've spoken with 5 mechanics I know and all say they messed something up and the story they're giving me sounds like BS. Not sure what I can do now....

you can write a really nasty review about how they riped you off and refuse to fix what they broke. you can also take them to small clames court and show how they didnt do there job and get some money back.
