Welp the rockers are finally so rotted through that the rust started on my driver side fender. It is so frustrating to have a good running car that is being eaten alive by itself

Last quote i had got on my 1st Gp (2001 GT) Was just shy of 3grand to have both rockers repaired, and that's just the metal work, and that price hadn't covered the undercoating and seam sealing it yet.

Gp's are a dime a dozen, if you like the platform, strip your mods, scrap the car, buy another...
 


Just don't let it get any worse than it is currently, the first thing I do after getting a car and changing out the fluids and filters is remove any loose rust on the body and cover in a few coats of rustoleum. Then match the paint color if it's a visible spot. My 05 shouldn't even have any rockers left on the rear due to them being crunched to all hell one time, but I sprayed it down with rustoleum and the rust never spread or went any deeper.

The rockers aren't really a huge deal, if you catch the rust now you won't need any body work later on. I suggest rustoleum only because then you don't need the surface to be completely free of rust. Just free of loose pieces, the paint converts surface rust to more primer and prevents future rust.

That was just from one part of my rocker. I eventually scraped the whole underbody and coated, and got more than this a second time.
 


Mine has 250,000 miles and the driver rocker is kind of rusted, but the passenger side is still complete! It just depends on how you take care of the car. I always say that the engine will outlast the body, and so far, thats been completely true. And a heads up to owners of 97-00 grand prixs ( all models ) they have been know to have strut tower rust so if your planning on having any work done to it, check out the strut towers!
 
I've got an 02, but I still see a little rust from the underside of the strut towers. I just took some old trans fluid and put it on the tops of the strut towers where you can see the strut(enough for it to pool up) and after a day it soaked through and the strut tower was wet with oil(on the underside). Not dripping, just soaked. So It shouldn't rust at all for at least 6 months. I don't see it hurting anything either. When I get new struts I'll repaint them to solve it for good, then oil won't be "needed".

Mind sending a clean GP this way? No I've got the rust mostly under control. I undercoated the whole underbody, but I have no clue what the rockers look like under the plastic panel. Is it easy to take off? I may use that stuff people were talking about. Por? or something like that, I just don't want it spreading.
 


Like i said its how you take care of them. My grandparents bought mine new kn 2001 and other than the rockers, its never given me any problems. I have even pulled out the carpet in the trunk to look at the strut towers, and its not even starting yet! But my point was that its all about how they are taken care of. And that michigans winter is hard on cars!
 
Well in what year did they say? 2000? They did something to help slow the strut tower rusting process. ^ Btw that's all were really talking about is rocker rust, which you can take care of your car as well as you want, but it really comes down to how much winter driving you do. And how much salt your area uses. Unless you have a automated hot pressure washer that sprays your entire undercarriage every time you get home from driving in the snow, it's going to rust. A friend of mine has a 98 Oldsmobile aurora that his grandparents passed down to him, and there's not much rust on it at all. Well, they didn't really drive it in the winter much. Just to get grocery's and visit family once in a while, and other than that it sat in the garage. No wonder.
