was wondering of the people here who removed the resonator and replaced it with a glass pack, how you got a flange on the one end.

i saw these split flange things but they seem to be more for the 2 pipes to be pulled together type set up vs the flat to flat flange from the cat to res like our set up.

i picked up a 31 inch thrush glass pack, with 2.25 in and out lets, if i need to weld a flange on i have a shop down the road, just need to find a flange, and maybe cut the glass pack a bit shorter, as my old res looks to be about 28 inches long from flange to outlet tube end.

some how im already thinking to get it welded on. input please.
 


thats a good plan but i dont have my own welder nor can i weld well, and the shop is a welding shop not a muffler shop, so im on my back with hand tools.

the exhaust on my car has all been replaced already, everything is clamped together, so if i can break it all apart and clamp it back up that would be sweet.
 
Take the glass pack to the welding shop, and have them weld a stub on either side of it. Come home, put the car on ramps, put it up, make some marks, and cut your old one out. Trim the stubs if need be, and clamp it in place.
 


Take the res and put about 6" of pipe on either side and weld it up then mark under the car and cut out the res and splice in the glasspack. Then you can cut it shorter if you need to and it'll bolt into place.
 
just to say again, this is not a factory exhaust, its all been replaced at one time or another, so i have all clamps where the pipes and parts meet. so in theory i should be able to measure the old one flange to outlet tube end, and make the glass pack a bit shorter, 1 1/2 off each side should make it real close to original size and just clamp and bolt it back in, no further cutting or welding should be needed.

just really wanted to know about these split flanges and if they would work in place of welding a new flange on. trying to cut out another guy with his hand out. the welding shop.

local muffler shop wanted 275 to swap the res out too, friggin thieves.

That's what I was trying to say....have the welding shop weld on a 6 or 8 inch long stub pipe on each end of the new glasspack. When you get home, cut your old resinator out, and start fitting your new glasspack in. With the welded stubs of pipe on the glasspack, it gives you room to position it and cut some off if need be.

That's exactly how we did it in the muffler shop i worked at. You MAY or MAY NOT have to have the ends of the stubs expanded, so slip over the old existing pipe so you can clamp it. Any muffler shop will have a pipe expander. I think you can even buy a manual one at most auto parts stores if you want to do that on your own.

i already got the glass pack, my old res is about 28 inches, and the glass pack is 31 inches, so i should be able to direct fit it.
 
Oh ok. I was thinking the gp was shorter. Is it a cherrybomb? I know they have a bit of a flange you can clamp on.

its a thrush, the in and out lets are straight, and about 3 inches long or so, so i can chop some of both sides if needed, to shorten it up if its not perfect.

i think im just going to pull the old one, and match it up so its the same, hell i bet i could cut of 2 inches on the flange side and weld the new flange on still.

yeah the gp have a different part # vs the regal. funny thing is the replacement one looks just like a glass pack, vs the can i have now.

not yet, as it would seem the screws to hold it on are under the spoiler, so not yet. ill need to mask it off and spray it. some day.
 
all i need to do is shorten the tubes a bit and have the flange welded in, got a gasket at napa, the replacement res was 100 bucks there.

so far the glass pack was 22, the gasket was 6, the flange cost 10. i cant see the welder charging more than 10 to weld the flange on, so im looking at a 50 dollar res replacement with new bolts and clamps.

Have him weld that flange onto the front end where it's nearly on the bubble part of the res. that way you only have like 1" too much at the far end. Cause you want more than 1/2" to clamp onto,.
 
yeah i was thinking of going that route, wasn't sure about if it being to close for heat reasons, but ill go that route, sounds like a plan. cut once weld once.
