Replacing Engine and Trans Mounts. Part Numbers?

I want to REPLACE ALL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS on my '97 SE 3800, but I'm severely pressed for time, I have to do this possibly over labor day weekend.

Can any of you tell me how many engine/trans mounts there are, part numbers, where the mounts are, and what kind of tools I'll need to get them out and swap new ones in? I can take it from there I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

I'm not familiar with the pros/cons of solid vs fluid filled mounts but I'd sure like to know.

I work for a quality assurance company so I have to travel around Michigan inspecting auto parts. I've had a few engineers check out the vibrations I'm getting from this car and I undoubtedly have a mount (or all of them) going bad.

The 'hydraulic' mount under the front of the engine is the only one I'm familiar with.

you can pick them up at any parts store such as Oreilly's or Autozone. You can expect to pay about 50 bucks for the engine mount, about 40 for the transmission mount. The upper torque strut mounts will probably be fine, if you like you can flip the square ones 90 degrees to limit movement.

They are really easy to change. 4 nuts on each iirc. Jack up the car and support it with jack stands. Loosen all the nuts, using a 2x4 on the oil pan gently jack up the motor and pull out the mount and replace.

yup. 4 13 or 15mm nuts on each one. some you can use a socket others you may need a wrench but it's very easy. the tranny mount is the easiest one just put a jack under the flywheel area and raise it.

I picked up the anchor solid rubber mounts for both at oreilly. They had the solid rubber motor mount in stock. The solid trans mount had to be ordered. Got it within a day or two. They are easy to swap out.

Cool, sounds like something I can do myself.

So there is a single engine mount, and a single transmission mount, not counting the torque struts?

I found a nice guide here for the engine mount. How exactly do I get the trans mount out? Also, I really want to be aware of what NOT to do. I have no experience lifting an engine.

To answer your question, yes the motor mount is on the passenger side and the trans mount is on the drivers side. The trans mount is changed out with the same method as the motor mount.

make sure you use a 2x4 or something and not just a jack under the oil pan or you could really mess it up.

Awesome, thanks guys. I bought the engine mount and ordered the trans mount today. I can pick up the trans mount tomorrow. $86 for both wasn't too bad of a deal. Within the next week I should have them installed and I'll post back about how it went.

it really shouldn't take more than an hour to do each if you already read the how to you know what to do.

Well I've been really pressed for time lately so I didn't get to the engine mount until a few days ago and I have yet to do the trans mount. The engine mount was definitely toast, totally destroyed. There was actually a pretty large hole in the side of the mount and all the fluid ran out. The engine bracket was resting/bouncing off the metal stud in between the two rubber "humps" of the top part of the mount. This was producing a noise similar to a bad strut mount and I had mistaken that sound for a suspension problem. It had impacted frequently enough in this way that part of the stud was flattened, not round.

The result is dramatically reduced vibration. The engine movement is still somewhat present, but only because the trans mount still has to be done. I've got the new trans side mount too but I have to wait til Friday.

Some issues I ran into:
When raising the engine using a 2x4 and hydraulic floor jack the passenger side CV joint was being stressed to its limits, at one point I heard a soft "pop" and saw the boot around the joint shift very quickly. I was pretty sure I destroyed the joint but it's been a few days and it is apparently completely unharmed. I even drove it on the highway several times. Definitely should have jacked up the hub.

When lowering the engine, the engine bracket was not lining back up with the two studs on the new mount, so I had two friends help me from above to guide the engine (by hand). Obviously this is very difficult to do by your lonesome, I tried for 20 minutes. With two people helping me we did it in 30 seconds.

hell, i'd say so!! that mount was ripped and flat as a pancake!

congrats on the motor mount.

tranny mount is somewhat easier than the motor mount imo since the tranny mount doesn't sit in a pocket as does the motor mount. just pop a jack and some board under the bell housing and go to town. good luck!
