• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Regal: goodbye motor

locks can fall out, if the valvetrain geometry is off, and you have rocker contact to the retainer. (improper length pushrods mainly) or if they were not properly seated during install. i work in a machine shop currently, when putting in the locks i always pound the top of the valve with a deadblow hammer or rubber mallet, to make sure they are seated, have had them pop back out before.

I do the same. Rubber mallet and pop them a few times. Anyone around for the first time, appreciates it..lol Also this setup was together for around 30-35K miles. I wonder if the valve stuck, got hit by the piston, then got heaved back down by the rocker again. It can happen.... it is simply super rare like every other problem I have with my vehicles.

Setup the file with DHP for starters, because I figured it would be easier. Used an L36 file, swapped the injector table to L67's, skewed the fronts by 2% for the plog, then copied over an stock L67 trans file as a mass copy. Engine runs great, cruised it down the street and set the code for incorrect gear ratio. Checked the file and it appears to be correct. It's goofy, I've done this for others and it's worked like a champ.

Setup a file with HPT by using my previous L67 file. copied all L36 settings for the engine over one by one. I'll get this..just a matter of figuring out how these tuners want this to work.

On the original motor I had Plog, DP, L76 springs, Manley retainers, HS 1.9's, Gen V, 3.6". Currently that is all sitting on the floor waiting for me.

Created the tune via DHP and for some reason there's a couple of things in the trans that didn't move over. Pulled up the tune in HPT and saw the couple of items, fixed them and now gear ratio is happy once again. Drove the first 20 miles to work to get a few things done. Looks to be running rich and has some KR (likely from fueling). That'll get fixed up soon enough. Meanwhile, it's up and running.

Thanks to Max (Intrigue98) and Jason (hitman) for the assistance they gave me on the swap etc.

Overall this was easy. Pulled old motor then checked the exhaust manifold (close enough) put my flex on the new motor (didn't come with it), swapped an L36 fuel rail on in place of the returnless L26 rail, switched oil filter adapters (Lucerne tucks under motor, W body heads straight to passenger side), moved the motor mount over, moved Plog. Dropped it in, changed the map connector to the L36/L26/L32 style, changed the maf for a good one that DSmuts sold to me instead of Danielle (neener neener neener D)

L26 exhaust manifold seems to push the exhaust back a little. I'm rubbing the firewall with the downpipe in reverse with some throttle (oh well..lol).

The kicker to the whole thing, I was most excited about being able to put this cool new thing on.

Purring

Texting with Brandon, he wondered how I swapped it in there so fast. Two days isn't fast in my book, so I'll toss the timeline out here for him.

Friday:
1pm started pulling motor
3:30pm ready to lift out, went out looking for fuel line solution as I wasn't ready for it.
7pm finally took motor out
7:30pm swapped out fuel lines to braided hoses with AN fittings.
8pm dropped new motor into cradle
11pm everything was hooked up and done except DP to exhaust manifold (wanted new gasket), Fuel rail (waiting for one to arrive on Sat). Filled oil.
Called it a night

Saturday:
11am Got the parts and some coolant
12pm Hung out with neighbors
1pm Fuel rail arrived, tossed that on with L67 injectors, fixed map wiring to correct one, puttered around.
2pm lunch
3pm Worked on tune
3:30pm fired it up and burped it.

Overall it too a lot longer than it needed to take. I didn't rush, didn't push and took quite a few breaks etc. Friday I didn't rush because I knew I couldn't start it up until mid day Saturday.

I don't have boost, I have a super cool looking engine cover. Yes, I'm that happy about a stupid piece of plastic. Also, filled up on Saturday 24 cents per gallon cheaper than usual. Eh..did the math..it's only about $200 per year that I'll save.

Vacuum, yes. Actually drove right to Advance after you left and took care of business on that. It was only an FPR and HVAC line, in theory I didn't "need" those two for anything.

Glad you got her goin. You scare me man. My cars about to hit 188k on they way home. That gives me 16kish more if it holds up like yours.

it should do better than mine. Mine was abused as a child. The guy I bought it from told me he bought it at 64K out of Texas from it's original owner. He then gave it to his wife and teenage daughters. That car was then driven to and from colleges in NY and VA etc. When I bought it the suspension, brakes, oil pan gasket, VC gaskets and interior were pretty shot, trans studdered once in a while if you tried to launch decently.

I ripped it apart and rebuilt it. To give you an idea, the air filter came out with writing on it. Said a date (coincided with when PO bought the car) and the mileage of 64,XXX. That filter was put in right before the car was sold to the guy I bought it from. If that and headliner having water stains from the sunroof being out of adjustment was any indication on maintenance, then the car was abused badly. Sunroof glass was pushed up, took 4 screws and 2 minutes to adjust it.

I fear the car may not have had oil changes regularly. Heck..the trans fluid was brutal at 160K when I bought it.
