Recent Recall

yep. Is it fair to say GM wasn't getting rid of Buick anyways due to the fact that it's the first car brand? Buick was around before Ford.....

It being older than Ford had nothing to do with why it was kept around. It makes money, plain and simple.

The gubment looked at the books and saw the same writing on the wall that GM already saw. Pontiac was bleeding the corporation of money and cutting it was the only chance they had of saving GM as a whole.

So he fixed the damage after the fire and they denied it.

Okay, 99% of us have never had a fire and have replaced our valve cover gaskets to prevent a fire. Problem solved.

Well, GM even refused to have a dealership or anyone look at it to see if it was the fire was because of the recall. Even if it was fixed, why was GM so quick to deny the claim?

Bingo. I wonder if the guys who repaired it themselves can get reimbursed for cost of parts

Man I sure did start a discussion lol. I was just curious as if anything would happen to me because of my old car igniting while I was driving it or not. lol didn't know if it was known knowledge or not

This is coming from someone who loves pontiacs, which isn't even in business anymore....and start on fire.
But I digress, let's get back on topic.
No actually I don't. Always been into Chevy. I just had an option between a mercury sable and a grand prix.... Which one do YOU think is the better choice?

Sables are a horrible choice in the salt belt. Probably the rustiest modern car, ever.

Fully loaded and rust free theyre not bad, they have some pep, reliable, and are comfortable to drive.

Absolutely uncomfortable. IK because I had an 01 sable and traded it in with just 54k because of a slipping trans to get my GP. Yes the trans was slipping at 50k. Ford's fwd trans are pathetic and slightly worse than a glass 4T65-E.

the thing I find is funny is gm recalls are things like they key issue... don't be a retard with 80 keychains on your **** and youll be fine... or this valve cover issue... that routine maintenance as someone said.... or the dexcool issue which I don't blame gm exactly. but for had all those 6.0 problems that involved catastrophic failures, the 3.5 ecoboosts were popping head gaskets too. when the focus came out those *****es light on fire. my first gf had one brand new from the dealer blew caught on fire and burnt to the ground, pretty scary when your 16 and been driving for like 3 months lol. I recently pulled apart a 220k mile l67 block and that thing still had the factory honing marks in the cylinders.... what about the explorer roll overs? ford recalls = you die... gm recalls equals something stupid that no one would have thought about 20 years ago when they deisgned the stuff... vs the Taurus 3.0 motor which all blew up 10 years ago. or the Chryslers with Mitsubishi motors that blew up the day the warranty wore off... the fact that gm is even issuing a recall on motors that all probably have over 150k miles on them should say something positive in itself. theres probably more 3800's with 150k+ miles on them still around than cars with ford 3.8's in them period.... and gm has been trying to kill Pontiac since like 1979 when they stopped letting pointiac use their own tougher torqier v8's and using sbc's... my brother worked at a dealership in the early 2000's and GM was offering a 2500 dollar cash allowance for an impala, and no incentives for a grand prix or bonnivillie.... weird... cuz we all know they are the same basic cars... chevy just cares about the corvette and other chevy name plates.... only reason they picked buick over Pontiac was because buick is the number one selling car in china right now actually. not really happy with that, but that's basically it.... it was intentional... they did the same thing to pointac they did to olds... in like 1999 they changed alllll the names on all the cars they sold so when grandpa went to the dealership to buy a new delta 88 they just had an aurora or an intrigue... wtf are those? so grandpas said **** it, I kknow what an impala is..... 2 years after they changed all the car names... they went under.... gm did the same thing to pointac... who the hell wants a g6 wheres my bonniville? they didn't know and gm didn't give them enough time for sales figures to recover before they pulled the plug. once enthusists figured out what the g8 was they went nuts over it... so much so that it was brought back by gm as the new "chevy ss"....

I have not researched this recent recall, but on the ancient one about oil fires-

As far as I can tell, the issue stems from a square-tube type plug wire retainer that originally sat just ahead of and below the front edge of the front valve cover. Right below the fill hole. Replaced it with normal retainers from a plug wire set. It was still in place when I bought my GT. If oil was spilled during a fill, it went into the retainer and stayed there. Also, if the valve cover developed a leak at the right spot, it could deposit oil there during braking. I believe the fires start when a car with that retainer, full of oil, spills some out the front during braking. Onto the front exh manifold. But not unless you shut the engine off immediately after braking and park in an unventilated space.

With it running, theres generally enough ventilation to prevent fire with a small leak. But stopping in your garage and tipping out a little oil from the retainer, shutting off, and closing garage door... now it can smolder and possibly ignite. As has been said and as I've learned over the years... your nose is an important tool when driving an aged or modified vehicle. Know your oil and coolant (and other fluids') smells and pay attention when the vehicle "speaks" lol. I park in a garage but if I catch a whiff of a smell that doesn't belong, you can bet I'll pop the hood right then and check it out! I don't think you'll burst into flames going down the street, esp if your valve covers don't leak.
