oh they identified the issue with the series 1 engines as well as the series 2.
they redesigned the hold down grommets and bolts between the series 1 and series 2.
why do you think the LS motors ended up with a really tall cylinder head rail height and really short flat valve covers with that same style of ring gasket .
trust me they knew about the oil leak issue. the fire issue was probably not as noticeable on the test mules considering the short span of time that they rack up miles vs the years that a typical car takes to rack up miles.
