rear view mirror /on star not working.

I have 2001 grand prix. I just noticed my rear view mirror is not responding when I push any of the buttons, The direction box is not on either.. Is there anything I should check , or is it usually the whole mirror that goes bad and has to be replaced?
 


OnStar is only free for the first year after purchasing the vehicle. To continue service, or reinstate it, you have to pay for it. Either way, we can't get the service on GPs anymore because, as goldgp said, OnStar signals went digital in around '08, so our analog units won't work even if we paid.

As to the other issues, are you saying the compass and outside temp aren't working either? If so, there may be a wiring problem. I've never really heard those features fail on a Gentex mirror.
 
Yes the compass and outside temp, are not working. Wiring behind the mirror on windshield ? or wiring where the wires run under the hood i'm guessing?
 
ok so you say the signals when digital around 08. so why would my 05 onstar work if i still wanted it too? my dad has fooled around with it before maybe around a year ago and we thought about paying for it but i didnt think it was worth it.

so is my signal digital from 05?
 
ChicagoChuck, I couldn't tell you where it's gone bad. I've never heard of one of these mirrors failing in any capacity. The only wire that runs under the hood is the one going out to the temp sensor. The rest should go into/under the dash somewhere. Where are you located?

Winter, how do you know it would work?
 


OK I have to find the sensor and see if its intact, I needed to change my bumper and don't remember seeing it.. ...Maybe a fuse? ... I'm located by southwest side Chicago.

Now that I think about it ..this probably had nothing to do with it, but the display screen on the radio that shows the channel/clock does not work either...the radio and CD player operates fine though....

No, the radio display is one little light bulb that commonly goes out. Easy fix, and shouldn't have anything to do with the mirror. The temp sensor not being intact wouldn't have anything to do with the mirror as a whole not working, either. There is a separate set of +/- wires for the temp sensor, so the worst that would happen is you wouldn't get a reading, or get an inaccurate one if something was wrong with the sensor. I suppose it could be a fuse

I was asking where you're located because we're going to have a w-body meet in Wheaton in a few weeks. If you can make it to that, I have several mirrors we can try to make sure it's not from the mirror itself.
 
Oh ok Thanks. I did finally find the air sensor, it's intact. I'll check around to see if any fuses are blown... Let me know the date of the meet and I'll try to come out.
