the one they borrow you at the store is typically not the right one. i bought mine, it was like $30.

I've done it a lot. Probably a few dozen times but I work on others cars as well
 
So it is worth it for you, but for this guy renting is his best choice since it looks like he could use money in other places of the car.

I'll probably end up buying some someday.
 
$5 on the one that they rent is the one that is meant for a vehicle that has the strut seperate from the spring.

i had to buy mine. you need the one that is two clamps that goes on the outside of the spring.
