im replacing the rear brake lines in my 99 grand prix. i have rotors in the back and abs. i ran into a problem and im wondering can anyone tell me if i can eliminate the reducer cylinder that is on the rear brake lines on both sides or will that cause the tires to lock up?
 


post a pic of what your talking about, theres nothing between the the cars frame and the caliper, along the brake lines.

never heard of a reducer cylinder.
 
im uploading a picture now. not really sure of what it is it seems to me that it is there to allow a certain amount of fluid through and not let it back out
 
I'd leave that alone, it also looks like you have had a brake line repair done already, looks like a compression fitting under the part in question.
 


so where can i get the fitting that goes into that because i wrecked the fitting and could not find it at the parts store that i went to, its a 3/16 line that goes into a larger fitting
 
its on the other side. the side that i sent you was fine. its the other side that i stripped out the fitting. its the fitting that goes into the "proportioner valve" which is bigger than the fitting that comes out of the valve
 
because i had to replace the line and when i took the fitting out to get the line out of the fitting i crushed it in the vice
 


Someone please double-check me, but I believe the part he needs is DORMAN Part #905952. I don't have the proper GM part number, but this should be a good equivalent. $15 for one on RockAuto.com, maybe other online stores as well. Also, if that is a compression fitting holding two brake lines together in that picture, REPLACE THE LINE. Compression fittings aren't made to handle that amount of pressure...that moment you slam on the brakes because you REALLY need them, the fitting will burst. If you don't want to replace the whole line, at least bubble flare both ends of the line and use proper fittings and a union there.

oh boy you really did it good this time. check out the other guys post for that part, see if it matches up.

if you go to a parts store or dare i say the dealer, they have diagrams you can look at to make sure your getting the right part. right on their pc screen for you.
 
Compression fittings FTW!! I've been running compression fittings on the rear brakes of my car for over a year now with no problems. Quite a few emergency stops too. If the rest of my car wasn't so rusty I might replace the lines but I figure it's only a matter of time until my car falls in half.
