rain season is here

So it started raining here and there's this thing that happens with the GTP and it also used to happen with the 91 GP SE. Whenever I hit a water puddle, the alternator will stop charging for a few seconds, then it will go back to normal.

At first I thought it was only the alternator, but then I noticed that the steering would get harder too. Is the the accessories belt slipping when I hit these puddles? Does this also happen to you guys? I don't think that this would happen to these cars when they came out of the dealership, I'm thinking I might be missing something.

^ This. My 95-96 used to do this as does my current Gtp,i seriously believe its a splash shield issue.

it certainly falls short on the coverage dept, you could drive a truck through the wheel well and frame on these cars, so maybe we should avoid deep puddles????lol

sounds like wet belts to me Juan. ive felt what you are talking about as well but in my older trucks, flood running, the steering would be all half working till the belts dried off.

well it's raining more now and it's painful to drive around like this lol. The steering gets stiff and the volts come down with any puddle I hit with the right side tire.

I checked the car and I do have what's called the splash shield:

But there must be another part missing. Like if I turn the steering all the way to the right I can see the lower part of the crank pulley. I tried spraying it with water myself and I get the same results. So it's in deed water that's hitting the belts that's causing this.

Is there any other part that's supposed to be down there?

my regals splash shield, the one im talking about is mounted under the engine, probably about 8 to 10 inches worth in total width under (the shield) covers the pulleys of the engine.

sticks out about a inch or 2 past the harmonic balancer, that's how i dropped a bolt and it was lost under the engine on the top of the shield. and i bet its still there too.

I looked at mine today.

Just says PONTIAC, OLDSMOBILE, BUICK W BODY.

If I remember I'll call the dealer tomorrow and ask for a part number.

When I bought my current GP, it was missing the splash shield that everybody is talking about. I bought one and put it in after having the car for a few months. You should definitely replace that if it's missing, but as stated earlier, check your tensioner. I had no slipping when mine was missing. I only put it in to keep more of the road crap off the engine.
