Radiator and reservoir..

Soo The other day I noticed that I could not see the coolant in my reservoir.. So I stuck a small clear hose down into it so see if anything is in there.
I pulled it out and it was covered in gunk and goo. Dark milky sh*t. I took the reservoir off and cleaned it out really good and put it back on and filled it to the right level. I Then took my radiator cap off and the coolant looked a little darker than usual but nothing too severe. I stuck my finger in, and scraped the side and it had a bit of gunk build up aswell. Should I be concerned? A radiator flush and clean is pretty expensive. Plus alot of work.
 


I would flush the cooling system, leave that gunk in there longer and you can have bigger problems.

Coolant flushes are easy and not $$$ at all. I can do it for under 20 bucks myself.
 
$14 a gallon here. for the straight coolant, not the pre mix, you would need more if you use pre mix. and it cost the same. i used 1 gallon, and added water, done.
 
Well I called a buddy of mine and he said it sounds like I am going to have to have my radiator dipped. Which is like 69 bucks. And I have to remove the radiator.
 
Why?

Just flush it, your friends doesnt know that a proper system flush can get almost all that crap out.

And what you described is not even bad at all, you are just on the starting stage of what can happen with that sludge build up.
 


i wouldn't go that far, drain it by pulling the lower red hose, and then pull the top hose off the rad, remove the t stat, put the housing back on, and let the hose hang down, into a large bucket. then put a garden hose in the rad, then turn on the hose and start the car, all the old crap will pump out the upper hose to the bucket, run the car till its pushing clear water, if you want to, seal it all back up, and drive it like that, get it all warmed up, then pull the lower hose again, see if its still clear, if so put the hose back on, t stat back in, and fill the rad with new coolant, it will mix in the engine. done deal. oh and bleed the system of air. screw on top of the t stat housing.
 
Pull the lower rad hose to drain the coolant.

Fill rad with hose water or whatever, and run the car for like 5-10 untill the thermostat opens to cylce the clean water into the motor to flush out the old stuff.

Shut it off and drain again, then do it again till the water coming out the rad is clear.

Fill it with coolant and bleed the cooling system to prevent overheating.
 
drive it around until the thermostat opens up then pull the upper radiator hose off the thermostat cover then stick a garden hose in there and flush it until the water comes out clear or until the thermostat closes up. Then put the hose back on and drive around for a little while then do the same thing. Do this 3 or 4 times then pull the lower radiator hose to drain the water and add a gallon of coolant to your system and then fill the rest with water and you'll have most of the crap out of it.
