Problems with 98 GTP?

splinter

Hello there. I am happy to join your community, thanks for having me.
I am looking at a 98 GTP that I found on Kijiji. All the typical GTP accessories, 370,000, body is mint. Can probably pick up for about $900.
What I am asking from you is to tell me what to look for in these cars. Any issues? From what I understand the 3.8 is bullet proof. Any tranny issues?
Thanks for all of your help.
Chris

That is pretty high miles. And for $900, I would imagine that things are bound to go wrong with it. Personally, if you are looking for a cheap car to drive, a high mileage GTP is not it. Find something with less miles, my opinion.

Ask for the service records, so you know what has been replaced. If there are none, walk away. With that mileage, I would want to know what is new, old, or could fail on me. It is either that, or buy it and only use it around town, so you can pull off safely if it breaks down.

The clean body will attrtact people, the engine of course could have isues you can't see and you need documents to see its history.

Canada = Kilometers.

haha I have 270k miles on my SE with original trans... High mileage means nothing if it's taken care of

im with this guy. i murdered my transmission at 130k because i drive like a drunken 16 year old, but thats besides the point.

I understand that. But the car is close to 230k miles. Which for a GP tranny is high miles. Most don't make it much over 150k miles. The ones that do were taken care of. If you don't know the history of the car when buying a high mileage car, you are best to assume that it was not taken care of.

A good way to tell is by how the overall car is. If little things don't work and were never fixed, then the owner was probably pretty lax on maintenance. If the car was modded at all, then it was probably run hard. Both of those things would point to a transmission that I would be leery of.

I have a 98 gtp with 192k miles on it sometimes it feels little jumpy but that is all I hope it can make it another 50k ore or one more year. :)
