good lord a 2x4 laid that way will hold up the engine and tranny? at bills he had a 6x6. id want that 2x4 turned the other way and doubled up for sure.

but im sure you tested this already.
 


trust me i know the breaking point of a 2x4, the way its laying in the pic is the weak way, turn it up the other way and its 3 times stronger.

engine and tranny will hang off it for a bit, engine is 330, trannys got to be about 200. thats a fair amount of weight.
 
Yeah I used a floor jack with a 2x4 spanning across both pans. Nothing up top at all. I don't see the point

Ah that serves as a jack stand of sorts if the jack fails. It won't fall on you though, you're not gonna be under the trans. It will fall until it hits the lowered sub frame I suppose.
My jack doesn't drift at all, guess I just trusted it.

Over ten years as a die maker running machines and moving huge chunks of steel. Still have all my fingers and toes. Common sense goes a long way.
 


I texted my dad. Sent him a card with a $50 gift card for Gander Mountain so he can get himself some hunting gear. From his response he sounds like he already knows what he is going to buy with it.

That hasn't been my experience. I always use some wood to distribute the load. Other than that, go for it.

Made some good progress today considering the heat. Dropped the pan, drained the fluid, cleaned the pan, installed shift kit, installed pan. Then dropped the cradle. Side cover should come off tomorrow.

Single 2x4... Not an issue. Held the weight with ease.

And because I don't like to leave weight "hanging", the jack stand will stand in overnight.

Biggest accomplishment for the day? Not getting trans fluid everywhere. I'm not even wearing any!
