Post Whoring - 5.5.1 - We have a turd in the punch bowl

Nice. Yeah it seems nature if your biggest problem when driving lol. Animals or trees

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

I got this today.

Nice truck..looks to be in good shape.
Do the tail pipes bounce when you hit bumps.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Thanks! It's actually in great shape considering the age. Just minor rust. Tail pipes are rock solid, just hung way too low. The whole exhaust needs to be redone IMO. From the manifolds, both 2-1/4" pipes merge into one 2-1/4" pipe to the muffler over the rear axle, then a dual outlet muffler dumps both pipes out the drivers side. Seems so wrong... A V8 running a single pipe...

But I hesitate to do anything right away, cause I know that motor is coming out soon. I'm thinking, low mileage junkyard vortec 350 or if I'm lucky 454, until I can pull off the LQ4 swap. Which is many years and many dollars away.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

That should be enough vehicle to handle whatever ya got. It has a 305 eh? Just run that until you get engine-serious. One of mine had a 454 but that only made the right pedal slightly feel urgent, and MPG just about made it un-usable.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

My father had a reasonable cam dropped into the 350 that was in my 75. Gave it some pep, but hey.. it wasn't ready "fast" was it..lol

I'd look around...here you can get some LS fun for pretty cheap.

Originally came with a 305, but that was pulled decades ago. Currently running a 350k+ mile 350. Mileage will always be a concern, but because this will pretty much only be driven occasionally, and for short distances, it's less of an issue. Whatever I do is going to have to be better than what it is right now... Getting about 10mpg, and it doesn't even feel strong. Totally restricted by a small exhaust and about 100' of emissions related vacuum lines!

Yea, there's not really much you can do to make an old tired 350 compete with a modern engineered engine. Even a set of vortec heads, cam and headers won't get you to where a stock LS/LQ engine is. I'm sure this engine will be fine until I can get my hands on an LQ4. But when I can get a vortec 5.7 from the pick a part for under $250, it's hard not to consider that as an option. I really don't want to spend a dime on this tired engine, when a newer, slightly more modern motor is so cheap.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Well i gotta help someone move, so i got the truck and trailer ready. Then i noticed the tires....my grandpa bought this off a guy who made it down the street. It pulls nice but mobile home axles.....tires were annoying to find. Amazon has low boy tires i need for 90 each 7-14.5 size which apparently is a ***** of a wheel size, but then i have to see if any tire place can even mount these because its an open center wheel. Also for the seasoned trailer haulers. Is it normal for the hitch the have play in the receiver?

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

In PA they won't even let you register homemade trailers with mobile home axles any more.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Yeah I'm not sure how my grandpa did it with this trailer, I should look into a hub conversion but he'd be too cheap to do it. We don't really use the trailer much tho so probably not worth it.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

LQ4 swap is lame unless you plan to mod it.

A newer GEN 3 5.3 makes the same power with slightly less torque. All early LQ4 are kinda turds, maybe 300hp at the flywheel. Get a LQ9 because they have more power and better heads/cam.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Long term plan includes a turbo. That's kinda why I was leaning toward the lower compression LQ4. That, and it should be easier to find one for a better price. Looks like the LQ9 fetches a premium. Still in the dreaming stages though. Haven't even passed emissions test in its current form....

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

yes, for play in the receiver. I still use a dump trailer with 3 mobile home axles under it. and haul extremely overweight loads of firewood(loaded with a skidloader) and full loads of rock for mine and my parents driveways. Those tires are probably 8 or 10 ply...unless your gonna put a dozer on that trailer(lol) ..your'e fine. the cracks are jsut a bit of dryrot, unless you're losing air.

Lots of folks put huffed LS'es in fox bodies... Coyote it? I'm told that these with trans are actually a budget player when considered as a package, and serious grunt is required to do anything. Now if I really wanted to stir the pot I'd say Cummins must. But its also a perfect place for two L67s lol. Just pokin at the dream to spur thought, I'm a die-hard iron Pontiac V8 stick in the mud poor dude.

A Duramax in that old K10 would be a monster! You're talking big dollars there though. I'm still trying to feed a family here.

If I were you I'd set my sights on this or anything similar. The same approach works on small blocks but you end up keeping your foot in it deeper because 400ft-lbs falls about 100 short of what will make that truck do just what you want. Nuthin fancy. When performance is adequate, I'm not one to push beyond that much. Much less expensive that way! So few mods are needed to swap this in...

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Nice. Love the torque of them BBC's!

Now, I need some technical knowledge....
Looking at my emissions test, my "idling" hydrocarbons (HC) PPM, and carbon monoxide (CO) % were within the limit. My "loaded" hydrocarbons were also withing the limit, BUT my loaded carbon monoxide was nearly twice the limit.

Keep in mind, the catalytic converter "fell off" many years ago.

I'm thinking a simple generic cat will drop my CO level enough to pass. (?)

Buick, Olds, and Pontiac 455 swaps (and some wierdo bastard GM builds, and Caddy swaps) worked really well and were popular in C10s. My stock 454 truck felt like... as a common reference... a GP GT. Gutsy, climbs good, pulls without labor pains. Probably 400-450 lbs TQ. Add 4WD and bump that to 500+ and at least the truck won't be a dud, like oh man I know it is now. More like a GTP. Nobody cares though, the look has you cool so no worries. But to answer your question with an opinion:

I think so. Was it warmed up good? The 305 is gonna have to be in tip-top condition and tune before making any valid assumptions about emissions. Not just that but 1/3rd of emissions are evaporative. Lets all just be glad they aren't looking real hard at those systems! IMO, a run-of-the-mill monolithic cat with sufficient size as used in later model vehicles with similar displacement should out-cat the old pellet style OE unit, if thats what it had. If you get a cat advertised as high flow, well its anybody's guess if the results will appease local authorities. But a stock 00-10 truck cat ought to do, I'm thinking. Something like that. If your truck has a feedback carb (wires going to it), and its a Quadrajet, theres a less-known tweak called APT adjustment. Adjustable part throttle. Alters tension on the primary rods. Oop, paragraph getting long must stop! I can speak Q-Jet, if you need some of that lol.
