Post Whoring - 5.5.1 - We have a turd in the punch bowl

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Sounds like the seal is out of my comfort zone. Lines I was told just take some finesse to get in because of the bends. I'll troll the interwebs and see what I can come up with.

The shop was saying the axle seals and the broken exhaust stud and pretty normal on these trucks? Along with the rear u joints going bad. The truck had one at like 70kmi, then had another recently.

Russo, gramps might be off because of other stuff. Older you get, theres more stuff bothering you that ya can't tell about or that nobody can help with. Just yeah cut slack if the talk gets crazy. That axle seal sounds like a not me either. Maybe check into doing his exhaust bolt and act interested about the rest then remind him you're no big time mechanic. That dirt road must be killer, you guys always got a car issue of some sort.

I know I try to let stuff not anger me but man I can only take so much and I don't like telling him because I know he's just trying to help/not do it on purpose. Like I'm working on my car and something is pissin me off he's over here doing like 20 questions I just wanna yell shush let me deal with it. Only happened one time I told him to go away man did I feel like **** afterwards cuz he took it to heart. Love the guy to death tho, he enjoys my help.

I've learned how to beat the hovering ones... get up like you're going for a tool or drink.... and don't walk back up for a quarter hour. Its how I dodge talky walk-ins or co-workers. I got bit by the 41 Ford this morning, she bled me and I laughed and called her beeotch. Knew she would fight me, and she got a lucky shot in. But its always within your rights to remove yourself from a bad situation like that. Mad makes more mad, I'm still learnin.

Quoting the TV character Matt Dillon and / or Zeb McCahan:

"When I know I'm right, I go ahead."

"Theres three things a man never does: Lie, hit a woman, and back down from a fight."

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Just keep the fluid level up in the diff untill whoever replaces them, the last thing you want to do is run it low on fluid. They will chew themselves alive very fast. The front GMT800 and GMT900 diffs are very weak in general and are known to fail without even losing fluid. A side bearing bites the dust and chews everything up, nice glitter oil when drained. But they kept making them because they are still good units and 90% are problem free other than the seals.

As for the exhuast manifold bolt, the 99-07 body style trucks it was a HUGE problem. Bolts would back out from engine vibrations or the heads would swell and pop off. Now the older the new body trucks get, the more I see some of the early 07-08 trucks start having the same issues, but it's always only the last bolt on the drivers back side.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Any specific way to check fluid level/fill it because I'll do that tomorrow if it's pretty easy from under the truck, I'll be honest the diff made some weird noises when in 4high last winter. I need to changed the fluid on the front diff the quad too. It has awful noises and I think its about at the end of its life because its gonenfar too long, its got like 6k miles on the stock fluid eeek

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

It's just a drain and fill bolt.

Remove the top one and stick your finger in the oil, if it's full of glitter it's already dead kinda.

Top it off or just drain it and fill it, it might last a while longer.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Fill to the bottom of the threads of the fill bolt I presume? I've never had to mess with diffs before.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

Cooler lines are "easy" but time consuming. The 4L60e lines are easier than the 6L80e lines on the 09+ models.

The axle seals are harder. I find it faster to remove the whole front diff from the truck. The passenger side axle tube must be removed to get that side done because of the snap ring/spring clip that you need to remove. The cv axle flange dealio won't release unless that whole tube that is bolted to the side of the diff is removed. Drivers side can be popped out of the diff once the cv axle is moved out of the way.

And that axle tube as many pieces inside it, couple springs and **** that you don't want to **** up because if one part isnt in the right spot it can wreck the whole thing.
Way to scare him..

Always take the top one off first cause if you don't and you do the bottom but can't get the top off, you're screwed.

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

At least theres not a smog pump. Looks like a fine starting point, someone kept that thing all GM!

Re: Post Whoring Thread 3.0.1 - Bill loves Drunkie long time

LOL the front diff is down like 2.5" of fluid, i had to really stick my finger in for it to hit fluid. Also found the broken manifold bolt on the passanger side all the way in the back. Trans lines look meh, they are a little damp.
