The stock GP exhaust tips are casted aluminum. Polishing them will not cause them to ever rust, as aluminum cannot and will not rust. If anything the aluminum will oxidize/tarnish as its exposed to the elements, but having a good sealing polish on them will prolong this. Plus, making them clean up nice with a simple wipe of a rag.
But to get them polished to a mirror shine takes a lot of sanding and once its completely smooth, then the polishing begins. If you do a good job sanding, polishing is easy. But you have to get rid of all the roughness and cast marks before you start polishing, cause the polishing will show any imperfections. And these being a casted part...will have a lot of them, inside and out. Kinda like the supercharger cases.
My tips were polished stainless steel from Borla. They looked shinny to begin with, but they do and will turn nasty from driving my car that does not have a cat on it. Once a year they get a touch up from the Mothers, and is good to go. I didn't "polish" mine so to say, I just am keeping up the upkeep on them to keep them looking good. Unpolished stainless steel looks like fresh, smooth concrete. Ugly, dull, and gray in color.
