plastic lug nut caps

These are the chrome painted lug nut caps SLP used to sell years ago. I have two like this where the end of the nut came off, but the threads were left behind on the actual lug nut. Whats the best way to go about taking the rest of the cap off without damaging the wheel? I'm going to do what I should have done years ago and put on the dorman chrome lug nuts.

Did you get these off? Is it a plastic lug nut cap that is stuck because the exposed part of it broke off?

Put a socket on it and take it off????

That looks like a locking lug nut of some kind, although I haven't seen that kind before.

Its kinda hard to see whats going on there. If you could slip a piece of hose over the remnant, maybe turn that...

I actually think if that happened to me I would carefully try pliers first. Its probably broken off because it was overtightened. A guy with a small punch and light hammer might get it to turn. If not, he could drive a pointy tool between the plastic and metal nut until the plastic breaks and can be pulled off. A few layers of masking tape on the wheel could protect it in case a tool slips.

I have a similar situation with our regal right now, only ours were $90 McGards.. so much for paying more for quality..
We're gonna try hammering on a socket when we get around to it, but worst case we will tap out the stud from behind.

These have only ever been hand tightened, so not sure what happened. The car has been sitting for months; needs cam bearing so we are putting a cam in and doing a genv swap while we're at it - once the garage gets back under 100 degrees. We randomly found this sitting on the ground by the car.

Let me try to rephrase, I have plastic screw on lug nut covers like what came factory on these cars...only difference is these are chrome painted instead of black (the ones PFYC used to sell). The head or the part that the socket goes onto came off at some point while driving (probably got a hairline crack when I did my brakes) and left the base or the part that threads onto the actual lug nut behind.

I have another lug nut like this where the top part broke off and tried prying it off with a small flathead, but didn't get very far. I haven't tried again since (now I have a collapsed window regulator I have to deal with. Just trying to figure out if theres a better way of getting the broken cap off

There are few ideas above, like the punch and hammer. Maybe try to get a groove in the edge and turn it. If you have the right size socket, PVC pipe or something you could glue to the exposed edge and then turn it?

The one I was able to peal up with a skinny flathead and pull off with needle nose pliers. The other was being a bit more stubborn. I had to stick my flathead in there and tap it with a rubber mallet to turn it counter clockwise, but was able to get it off. Just glad I didn't scratch the wheels anymore than they are
