output shaft play?

Hey guys, I've been chasing a vibration for some time here now, had the cv axels replaced a few months ago. was changing my brakes today and looking around for anything obviously wrong and I noticed that the output shaft of the passenger side has about a half inch of play when moving it by hand. anybody tell me if thats normal?

When you say output shaft of passengerside. You'd be talking about the axle. do you mean the outer most section that should be locked down to the wheel bearing with an axle nut is moving?

no, it would be the part coming out of the differential, and it moves left right up and down as well as in and out slightly

Sorry I'm not more descriptive..

Putting a trans together is a sloppy wobbly mess overall as you load the leg up. Then there's one or two pieces that hold most of it in place.. There needs to be some play.. question is..how much, right?

I also have been chasing a vibration in my 01 GP GT and have noticed this "play" (it feels like something in the trans must be loose like a bearing or something) the vibration i have occurs when im turning right and accelerating, accelerating over 70mph, or the cars suspension is compressed at high speed

There is really nothing in the trans that can cause this.. especially on a turn. It can be an axle, wheel bearing etc. Those items are common to wobbles that come or go when the wheels change orientation.

Thats my question of the month......How much play should the differential stub coming out from the driver side trans have? 2001 GTP

Put the car up on a lift thinking its cv shaft problem and took left cv shaft out and differential stub shaft have excessive play up & down side to side bearing noise. The reason for putting on the lift is the car doesnt move at first and then it moves forward and you hear a clunk come from the left side of the trans.

A humming or growling noise, sometimes due to inadequate lubrication in either the inner or outer CV joint, is more often due to worn or damaged wheel bearings, a bad intermediate shaft bearing on equal length halfshaft transaxles, or worn shaft bearings within the transmission. Think I found my answer

we'll let me know ive just been letting it go, hasnt gotten any worse deff have a noise that sounds almost like ive got mud tires

Im sure Trannyman can chime in to help enlighten us about why the driver side stub shaft of the 4T65E-HD get loose to the point of not engaging intermittently causing noise in our 98+GTP cars.

I don't believe that is what that info means. I've talked to Dave when rebuilding a couple of transmissions and he mentioned a large amount of a whining/growling being from the stator bearing. This particular bearing is where the input shaft comes through the casing from the torque converter to drive the chains. It shouldn't cause your clunk. I'd think that is either a bad CV shaft or a strut mount.

Second set of CV shafts......so def ruled out.....and I saw my self how much play the stub shaft had. Plus the car moves and doesnt move until the shaft engages and moves the car.

Guy this is what I need to be replaced. Anybody know of a good source for these? Thinking of just buying OEM.

That's some planetary stuff from down in. That plastic piece is the lube dam and the splined shaft you have goes into the 3rd gear sprag.

I have 2-3 transmissions laying around and those parts should be good, or ebay, maybe a trans shop. Likely though, most shops won't stock them because they are standard hard parts that typically don't go bad.

What when wrong with them?

Those parts were not from my trans. they were just based on info from my research of symptoms the car has. I just authorized a full rebuild happening in a couple of days. Let the fun begin.......:th_thumbsup-wink:
