Old Thread

Went out looking for my first new car back in '98 and really liked the Monte Carlos at that time....ended up with a '98 z34 that my son drives now (still only has 55,000 miles on it....was a garage queen for a few years) 2 years later I ended up test driving a bright red 2000 GT fully optioned and loved it. I've never driven a GTP, so I don't know what I'm missing...lol. I love everything about the vehicle....from the handling ....appearance ....etc. I ended up driving the 2000 for 9years and 100,000 miles till the transmission went and the rockers were gone.....traded it on a liquid red 09 G8 GT. Missed the Prix so much that I ended up searching and finding a 01 GT with 55,000 miles.....of course bright red. I'm sure there are a lot of newer cars with more bells and whistles.....and they may be faster too.....but there is something about the 97-03 body style that I just really like. Even after driving one for almost 10 years....I don't get tired of the look.

Re: What Made You Want To Purchase A Grand Prix

LOL. You either love them or hate them. Mine was black with a single silver racing stripe down the middle, targa top, ZR1 wheels, headers, and fun as hell to take around corners. I actually prefer the C5 body style, but the C4 value wise was worth more than the GTP. It was hard to pass up a RWD V8 fiberglass body car that was a straight trade. :)

I absolutely love the 68ish-81 body style I will own one one day. :D

Well my love for GP's started when my aunt (who worked for Ford) bought a new 97 gt back when I was 15. She had a probe first that was always in the shop, then she got a 96 Taurus that was constantly in the shop also. So she decided to get a grand prix. Funny part was when she drove the gp to work the first time they egged it lol. It was a white sedan with the 5 star polished aluminum wheels and it had the upgraded sound system (not the bose). She used to let me wash it all the time and take it for a spin afterwards. I thought it was the sweetest car in the world back then lol. She eventually totaled it and got a black 99 gt. Out of spite my other aunt got a 99 gt sedan almost identical. (which she still drives) In 07 I totalled my svt contour and i wanted something that was faster and larger so I started searching for a gtp. Didn't care if it was a coupe or sedan but it had to be a gtp and it had to have a moonroof and digital dual zone climate control. (97-2000) found my 2000 with 95,000 miles from a guy on Craigslist that was moving out of state. Talked him down to 3k for it in 08. I wanted something newer so i got the 08 gxp in January with 43k on it.

Re: What Made You Want To Purchase A Grand Prix

I first had a 95 buick riviera series 1 s/c, so i knew about the gp platform a little, trans ate itself in the riv, i needed a car bad and i didn't have a good job, so my family accountant was selling her 99 gt and i bought it, oh and it somewhat resembled the gto which was totally out of the question at the time :)

Re: What Made You Want To Purchase A Grand Prix

Because we were VERY specific on the GTO we wanted. It had to be red, black interior, LS2 with a 6 speed manual and the closest one was a few hundred miles away, so we settled for the GXP, still would rather have the GTO because it would get better highway mileage and be faster but oh well we like the Prix.

i drove almost 300 miles just to look at one and it turned out the trans was fubar

Re: What Made You Want To Purchase A Grand Prix

Back in 99 I was looking to buy a Camaro SS. I finally found one but the insurance was crazy! I couldn’t afford the car payment and the insurance so I wanted something fast. I was looking at a lot of cars and I came across the GTP. I was instantly in love with it. I wanted it fully loaded and thought I got every option. I was showing it to a friend and he asked if I wanted it fully loaded why didn’t I get the GTX? After that I wanted a GTX so bad. Well in 2002 I sold the GTP to get my 2002 Camaro SS. I have always missed the grand prix. Through the years when looking for a daily driver I would kick around the idea of getting another grand prix but it never fit the budget. I went through neons accordsetc. Well I was finally looking for a new daily driver and decided it would have to be a grand prix this time. Figured if a grand prix why not a GTX. I searched everywhere and finally contacted a guy who was not even selling it and was able to buy one. Now I drive it every day and love it. I’ll never get rid of it again.

Re: What Made You Want To Purchase A Grand Prix

Well, after the kids all got tall enough to drive their own butts everywhere, the wife and I decided to get rid of the Durango and get something smaller and sportier. Place my brother worked at had a 98 GTP with a fancy hood they were willing to do a straight trade on. Always kinda liked Pontiacs and the wife loved the hood and the HUD (say that fast).

Unfortunately, the previous owner kinda beat the car (ok, he beat it a lot). It was fast and fun, but needed constant work. Eventually, after replacing the brakes, front suspension (most of it anyway), tranny and etc we just got sick of working on it. I enjoy working on the car, but even after putting all the money into it the car still has all kinds of issues; no AC, the sunroof motor is blown (luckily closed), the suspension still needs help. When the rear exhaust basically fell off, we decided enough was enough. Went looking for another car.

We did decide we actually like the GTP, just not THAT GTP, so I found one nearby and picked it up. Also needs work, but nothing like the old one. And, they are fun. We can have a fun car AND put the grandkids in it when we need to.

Anyone in MA looking for a green 98?

Re: What Made You Want To Get A Grand Prix (Especially A GTP)

there cheap to mod till you pull it out of the driveway and stuff starts going to hell

They are easy as hell to work on. I did a head swap from start to finish in under 4 hours. Thats even dealing with the overhead cams, timing belt, etc. My little 4 banger was making over 250 to the wheels and was mid 12's with very little mods. GP guys spend more on a upgraded trans than I spent on that whole car.
