Ok to go from a Synthetic oil, to a synthetic blend??

I've been using Full Syn ( mobile 1 HM ) since I bought my car, and the previous owner used Full syn as well.. They didnt have any 5/30 at wallyworld, so I picked up Valvoline Max life syn 'blend', not the full syn... Its about 1/2 the cost and from what I know , has always been a good oil in all my previous cars, but I always used conventional, then went up to a syn blend... In this case I would be going from a full syn, to a blend..

Just wondering if thats ok,

thanks

No problem at all really. Just don't treat it like synthetic as in expecting it to be as easy flowing in very cold temps, and how long it lasts. It's very comparable to conventional with a bit more additives and maybe a little synthetic oil. So basically change it after 3-4k like conventional, and take it easy if you do really cold starts and driving without warming it up.

Thanks guys.. I may hold off, Its frigid here in northern MN, and the car is groaning pretty bad in the mornings ( its been about -5 to -25 below zero, AIR temp every morning for about 2 weeks ) A few days ago I tried the remote start like I do every morning , and the remote starter kept trying to start it and the car flooded BAD... Took me 2 days and a battery charge to get it running again when the temps warmed up ( to a tropical 7 degrees above lol ) So now I gotta get rid of that oil, as it reeks of fuel

I have used wix/napa gold filters for 8+ years in every car Ive ever owned.. I hear alot about purolators, how are those.. Ive always saw them at walmart next to fram so never even considered them

I usually go with wix like you do. I believe they make Napa's filters. Purolators(97%) are a step below wix, still good but kinda considered an economy filter at the same time. Purolator synthetic filters(99%) are pretty nice though, I'll go with them next time I change my oil.

Also it's not good if you have gas in the oil, that's way worse than having coolant in it, as it is a solvent (I think that's what I'd call it)

Yep. Washes down the rings and bearings. Def. not good. I'd change the oil before running it anymore personally. $40 oil change or $400+ motor swap? Hmmm...

And FWIW, I also run Wix on all my cars except my Vic and have for the past 13 years and have yet to have an issue.

Yeah I really like wix/napa. A $40 oil change? $22.47 for valvoline full syn oil, $6.29 for a wix filter, tax(here .06%) = $30.49 I did mine for a few bucks cheaper when I got a purolator for like $3.50. It depends on how much gas is in it really, but any is not good. It probably breaks down the detergents in the oil too.

My question to you guys is this. How many of you ever seen car oil filter beening made? When I was in my engineering clas we went to a factory that built them and found out its all paper and a mesh screen just different ink on the can. In short all filters are made the same just slightly different mesh screen.

GM use that Dexos oil now, since late late 2011, early 2012. It at first was just a full syn but now certain oils like the valvoline max life is a dexos syn blend that works just the same.

This is not true. All filters are not even remotely the same.

Ac delco seems to have decent quality filters...but, I am going through a bunch of Napa gold filters that I bought when they had their oil filter sale.

Also, you will have no issues switching to a synthetic blend. Mobil 1 isn't a full synthetic oil anyways. It's also not the good of an oil either.

Actually they're not all the same. You can watch a video on youtube searching how oil filters are made. I've taken apart many filters over the past year and they're all the same style in theory with different quality levels pretty much. Some have paper end caps, some have metal. Some anti drain-back valves are rubber and can fail after 3k miles, and some are silicone and last a very long time. Some of the bypass valves are at the bottom of the can(not so good) and some are right at the top where the oil comes in. And the filter media changes slightly with each filter, they all like doing it a bit different. Again youtube has a bunch of videos of people taking them apart.

Actually Ac Delco low level filters are pretty poor quality. They're comparable to a fram or maybe a little cheaper. Mobil 1 claims to be a full syn and what would make you think it's not that good of a synthetic oil?

You are correct about ac delco. I didn't realize they were so bad.

Here is a decent description as to why mobil 1 isn't fully synthetic.http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2548209

Well I changed it. Running valvoline maxlife blend.. Aaaaand what happens a day after the oil change... Its -15 when I wake up for work, I go out to start it as I have had a better chance in the past of it not flooding from avoiding the remote start. And the f'n thing won't start again. Man every 3.1 or 3.4 I've ever owned NEVER had cold start problems. But this and my old SSei were a ***** whenever it was below zero

Sooo I'm guessing its flooded again.. Goddammit...

Time for a block heater... Or a for sale sign

It gets that cold around here a few times a winter. My car has always started, but you can tell it's definitely not happy about it. I would probably do a block heater if it was that cold here every morning.

Yea every year we have a good month of below zero temps.. Its usually in January tho.. But its been an odd year as we already have well over 2 feet of snow on the ground and a few weeks straight of below zero..

2 January's ago our average temperature was -3... Last years January average was +2

So yea it gets nasty cold here... Wind chills last year hit -45 for quote a few days

Just a random thought... Do you guys think my overkill PCM might be causing issues with the cold weather with the fuel changes he makes in his PCM? Bad o2 sensor , ??

I just find it weird that it almost fires. It will crank , fire, crank, fire, but just not start. So close most of the time.. Then it floods from not starting... Maybe just swap back the original PCM, to see if it helps?

Any other suggestions?
