Ok soo Pulley squeel. This sucks

Its not happening all the time more when it gets colder ofcourse. Seems to go away at higher rpms but is getting worse even then. Oh and I got new belts all around. Its not qwite a squeel like a whine squeel comes and goes.
I spun all the pulleys and the alternator makes a slight rattle sqeekish and the PS pulley doesnt spin easy but thats expected on the PS

I know its not from the S/C. My power steering pump is close to calling it qwits that pulley has a tiny tiny bit of play if I try crazy hard and a wobble that you cant almost notice when running. It sounds much more like the alternator or tensioner.

So my main questions for whoever is

1. Is there any crap besides the belt dressing like somthing I can spray into the pulley to make it stop to narrow it down.

1(again). Can the power steering pulley make the squeelish>

2. How hard is it just to swap tensioner pulley? Just clockwise to take the nut off and then work the pulley off or should I just replace the whole damn thing?

3. How the hell do you guys usually narrow down which one is being a lil ****?

Thanks again this sucks

Well its probably not the ac compressor, that usually sounds like a knock.. I would put some of your favorite lube like WD-40 (ACCURATELY) on part of the alternator that would be prone to squeaking.., and maybe the tensioner, if possible. See if it goes away then..

Good luck.

Don't use belt dressing it's really bad to use it builds up in the grooves.

Good to know thanks

Well I just replaced the tensioner pulley a hour ago so that not it. Its not coming from anywhere near the AC. Where would I spray on the alternator?

Probably anywhere but the coil or belt, i know mine squeaked when new, maybe they squeak when old too.

Ill give it a shot I plan on buying one anyway so if I screw it up whatever. You ever heard of shops rebuilding them still? I heard its cheaper better quality and work here not china

I just got a used one off ebay for $25. We will see if it does the trick. So Im only $45 into my squeeky pulley chase not bad. After this its a new power steering pump atleast thats something I actually need.

You mention your ps is an issue, right? Probably causing a load on the belt etc.

The pump should turn easily by hand. Not fast..but easily.

When I read your post.. I'm not sure why, but you highlighting the ps pump for us... it kinda stuck in my mind.

Yea its a issue. Im hoping its not actually the rack & pinion tho. Seems to be a little clunk in the steering when I turn the steering wheel back and forth

Well..if you are looking for a squeal, I'd be looking at what you highlighted.

Wink wink..look at the ps closer.

Lol yea Im going to for sure. So you would know is this a swap I can do in my driveway? Im doing the return line and pressure too? Looks just like it will be cramped as hell

You may be able to take a long screw driver and use it as a stethoscope to determine which pulley is bad.

But as mentioned before it sounds like its gonna be your ps pump. Its a little tight in there but overall not that bad to replace.

Goodluck.

Yea I tried that hard to pin point still. I hear these pumps arent common to go bad. Since I had a leak forever tho. Just hope its not the Rack and pinion. Oh well. I just got a used alternator in for cheap cheap cheap try that cuz I swear the noise is coming from up top but the PS pump needs replacing anyway. Soon enogh Ill have a brand new car with a old ass body

well you can buy an automotive stethascope at sears for like $10. i bought one. helped me figure out quite a few things. like on the van, we have what sounds like rocks rolling around in the belt area. turns out the alternator bearings are crapped out. it's very useful. might try it and listen around before thoughts of buying racks and pumps and what not.

Well I just had a buddy/shop narrow it down for me. My rack is good is my PS pump is good its my pressure hose that is screwed. He also said my tensioner for S/C is done but that wasnt the noise anyway cuz it still made it after I took off the SC belt. He spun my alternator.. Said that the alternator bearings were on there way out. I thought it may have been that but went for the tensioner pulley first $18 bucks gonel. Oh well got a alternator off another Regal to throw on while I take mine to get rebuilt.
