Oil

i own a 2006 gp GXP which has a 5.3l v8 and im experiencing some consumption problems. I know your suppose to check your oil between changes but i didnt and the low oil level message poped up on the screen. so i stoped and pulled into the gas station and waited for things to cool before i checked it and put oil in. The car is using probably a half a quart to a quart of oil between changes. I get my oil changed every 3000 religiously. im using just the regular oil(anyone using synthetic?). So my question is why is my car using this much oil between changes.

Yeah, Displacement on Demand.

A half quart to a quart is really not a lot of usage. You should really keep an extra quart on hand. Technically you should check it at every fill up, but the way some people drive that would be every other day. :p

I Han an oil consumption problem in the summer. It would use 1 qrt of oil in highway conditions in 1600 miles. I had to have the valve covers changed . If you call the dealership and give them your vin they can tell you if you have the upgraded covers or not. The pcv system sucks oil up into the intake and burns it. But half a qrt to 1 qrt in normal driving conditions in 3000 miles is acceptable by GM standards for the LS4.....

Yep, DoD is more than likely the protagonist. Like prior users have said, you can have it tuned out so it no longer displaces the four cylinders. You might or might not lose a couple MPGs, but at the same time you won't be burning oil.

i have yet to tune mine out but several people over gmls4.com have tuned it out and said to gain mpg in the city and only lose 1-1.5 on the hwy. the way i drive mine it doesnt really matter. i also read that tuning it out will save the trans. something to do with the torque converter.
