oil everywhere ????????

so went to change my oil on my 2000 grand prix gt and the oil pan was covered in oil both front and back sides of the block were covered in oil and both heads and between the valve covers and intake plenum has puddles of oil. when drained oil only had about 2 quarts left in the pan!!!! whats common?

top of the covers where clean but had no sign of leakage before and now both at the same time? seems unlikely

I would say the rear valve cover on the back side is leaking down the block.

Oil pan could be leaking too.

And your LIM gasket needs to be changed.

I live not far from you if you ever wanted help.

Why does anyone think that the LIM would leak oil? There's no pressure at all for oil at the LIM gasket. Sure a little might seep up the bolts etc, but it's all seepage. Valve cover gaskets seep, they seep fast on the lower side because it's sometimes under the level of the oil.

For this much oil think of how you may have built pressure in the engine to push the oil out. Check that pcv.

lower intake manifold.

Cam, Please explain how the LIM gasket where oil is returning to the crankcase w/o any pressure on it is leaking this much externally. I don't understand where you are coming from with the LIM diagnosis.

I had one of the end seals of my motor wander out of place when I was assembling the lim once. Even with teh gasket totally out of place, it barely leaked any oil.

Hmm, thats a little odd, last night I coulda sworn he asked what a LIM was in this thread above my last post, maybe I'm seeing things, or just going crazy.

Okay, maybe the way I said it or the way I worded it could make me sound dumb, when saying that the falling oil can seep past the gasket and collect in the runners on the LIM.

What I should be saying is that if oil is pooling in the runners, you have valve covers leaks. And if oil is running down the sides of the block from uptop, its more than likely a valve cover leak aswell.

Also I said his LIM gaskets should be changed, because I'm guessing they have never been done before and that his car prolly has well over 100,000 miles.

I wasn't thinking you were dumb, I am trying to understand. Each day I learn something new in my life. Sometimes it's about the car, others its' about relationships etc etc. Always learning though...I ask a lot of questions.

I know that oil can seep up the bolts into the intake runners, I've seen VC's fail bad enough to put some oil up there as well, although it's usually more out the bottom of the cover than the top and I've seen them fail in teh typical soak the exhaust manifold and run down the motor. Usually though, the only place oil is even touching the LIM gaskets to my knowledge is the end seals and if it were wicking up a bolt. This is why we typically worry about coolant burning when we see LIM gaskets go bad.

Like I said though..not trying to call anyone out, just learn.

ok so took it to a friend who is a mechanic and he seems to think its the plenum that is leaking and also said something about an updated or upgraded plenum available any thoughts and where can i get this plenum?
