No compression

I have a 2002 Grand Prix GT with a 3.1. The car was bought in this condition and will not run. Put a new battery in it and checked the fluids before I turned the key. When turning over it seems to have no compression. I pulled out a plug and it had 27psi. Figured the timing chain broke or skipped a tooth so I pulled the cover off. Timing marks line up correctly. I am out of ideas. There was no coolant or metal in the oil so I am guessing its not a head gasket or blown cylinder. Any ideas would be great.

Could be a valve problem, May be washed down with fuel in that cylinder maybe a stuck open injector could try washing the cylinder wall down with oil. Not sure could be alot of things.

I didn't know they made the GT with a 3.1 either. I got the car for $180 from a girl who was going to scrap it. The car was over heated and there was way to much oil in it when I check it (about 3-4qts over full) All she knew was it wouldn't start. I bought the car with intentions of putting a new engine in it but figured I would play with i before I pulled it out.

It probably just has gt bumpers on it. I would say it's probably a cracked head if it was overheated that bad.

$180?

That's a deal even i would take.

Swap a 3800 into it and be happy!

No compression on 1 cylinder - it would still run.

Whats the compression on the other cylinders??

Just decoded the vin and your right its an SE. Has stock GT emblems and bumpers on it. At this point I'm ok with swapping an engine. Dropping in a 3800 would be great. I haven't looked into it but whats all involved in going from 3.1 to 3.8?

Haven't checked the other cylinders quite yet but I am assuming that the compression will match the one I checked by the way it sounded when I turned it over.

Its very unlikely that all the cylinders will be that low...

If you find 2 cylinders next to each other with low compression, its probly a cracked/warped head.

If all the cylinders are below 40-50 psi then someone has taken the rings out of the engine...

Thats what I am thinking aussie. I figured if it was the head or gasket there would be coolant in the oil and would be a mess down the side of the block. I am guessing it was over heated on more then one account and the rings are smoked. Even if two cylinders were down it would still fire or at least try and start.

it is possible you have a stuck valve, or other top end issues, but from what I have heard the 3.1 isnt even worth troubleshooting...

Just go get a decent engine from a junkyard, or research the 3800 swap..

Cant be that hard, it was an option for your car, so its gotta be pretty easy..

Before I pull the engine I am going to pull the rocker covers and check things out, then the heads. If it looks bad the engine will come out. Will do some 3.8 swap info at work tomorrow. The great thing is the car has 120k on it and is perfect condition except for how the interior smells like marijuana because the girl apparently like to smoke doobies every where she went.

Lmao!! Indeed search the car. I searched my GT and found narcotics anonymous brochures and a list of all his group contacts. No wonder the idiot ran over a stop sign...
