Ok guys, i just bought a 2000 gtp with a bad trans. I want to get a built trans but in the mean time to get the car back on the road and driveable, im on the hunt for s good used trans. But what im running into is that they have 2 different transmissions in the gtp's and i have to find the same one thats in my car or it wont work right. Is there any truth to that? Or will any trans out of a gtp work? If not which years should i be looking for? Sorry for the stupid questions but im new to gtp's. Thanks in advance for any help

Oh and no stupid ???? here most this forum is full of ****heads that actually love to help when they can lol

I was told that there were 4 different transmissions in grand prix's.. 2 in the gt's and se's and 2 in the gtp's. And that i have to find one with the same id code as mine or it wouldnt work right. Well i cant see the id tag on my trans and dont have a life or jack at my house. Im considering trailering it to the dealership i work at to put it on the lift ony day off. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So a trans out of any 97-02 gtp will work? Cause i was told by s trans shop that the 97-98's were different than the 99-03's

Here's the situation...
You can use any SC'd transmission from 97-08 except 03. 03 is the oddball that you want to avoid.

97 had a different method to clip the diff on the output shaft and different sized bolts holding the pan on.
98+ had the new clip style and a different torque converter lockup methodology. This is why you should want 98+
03 is the odd year as it used a different valve body, and different controls for it. Stay far away from 03
Somewhere around 02/03 the park neutral safety switch was moved internally, this won't change enough to cause you a problem.
The outter cases were different on the back for say Bonnevilles and Park Aves, but you don't need that for a mount and you can ignore that difference.

Park Ave Ultra
Bonneville SSEi
Regal GS
Grand Prix GTP
Impala (04+ with SC motor)
Monte Carlo (04+ with SC motor)

Those are the cars that will have the trans you are looking for.

Awesome!! Thank you!! Who would you all suggest to go to for a built trans. I would prefer someone local to central indiana to avoid shipping charges. I have done a little research and know thrasher isnt too far from me but like i stated at the beginning i am new to the gtp performance scene so i dont know who is good and who isnt. Thanks for the help!

Tripledge land?! Sorry im new here and dont know what that is!! I wasnt questioning thrasher, i was simply asking for recomendations

sorry, thought someone had said to talk to Dave at Tripledgeperformance.com He's in Indiana and one of the best trans builders for this transmission.

I called and talked to Dave at Triple Edge. He is less than an hour away from me and was very informative and extremly nice. He will be getting my trans business!!
