Need Help ASAP!!

HI,

Have a 98 GTP, have the Ubend, cat detele, 3.4 pulley, new intake, plugs, wires, and ported throttle body. I am currently in route to Dallas, TX. Car is running ok, but when i get on it, it sputters and hesitates. The only thing that happened was that I had to put in 89 gas instead of the 91, as it was the only thing avalaible. I only put in 6.5 galls of this, as and there was about a half tank of 91 still there.

Problem: The check engine light flashed three times, and is now stuck on, what can i do? I dont want to ruin my car, and cant really afford to get the code read by a deal. Please help!!

take it easy, dont run it at WOT and get some higher (91 or above) octane gas in it ASAP. If the gas is the issue and it is causing a misfire, it will go away in time after you get the new gas. It will not go away instantly though, but you should notice your car running better. It does seem to run OK when you are not getting on it, right? You could have just gotten bad gas too(water in it?) you could try and put some Heet in it at the next gas station-make sure you get the right kind. This will get rid of the water in the tank, if you have any. just get new better gas in it asap.

Awsome thank you, sorry just a lil scare. Yes the car does run fine when I dont get on it. I have about another 300+ miles until I get to my destination, so I should be able to run through this crappy gas. I just found a as station that has 91, so I put 7 gallons of 91 in it, along with some Octane Boost, hoping its just some S***ty gas. Do you happen to also know if the SES light will go out on its own once I doesnt detect the misfire, I mean im pretty sure it wont when the car is still running and had detected the misfire, but say I stop and grab some coffee along the way let the car sit for a few (off), if the engine doesnt detect a misfire, will the code go out on its own, or will I have to run to Advanced Auto or someone pull, and reset the code?

Thanks so much for the quick response, sorry just first road trip ive had this car on since ive had it, and was hoping for no problems lol.

When the SES comes on due to misfire, will that code go out after time automatically, or does it have to be erased by code reader?

I think it will go out on its own if there is no misfire for a while. It wont be as soon as you shut it off and turn it back on. It may take an hour or so after it actually stops misfiring. I believe it will reset by itself though. Hope you got to your destination safely and by now, you probably already have different gas in there. Is it running OK now? Did the light go out yet? If it is running OK and the light is still on, you could pull the battery cable off and leave it off for a half hour, and then reconnect it. This could also reset the light until it senses the misfire again(assuming that it is a misfire that is setting off the SES light of course)

Codes will automatically clear. There's a set number of cycles w/o problem for them to clear. It's probably something like 50 drive cycles for a misfire.

Back in Nebraska again today, car goes in for Diagnostics tomorrow AM, still showing a misfire on 4, with new plugs, wires, and injector

i have more then the intake. i have the u-bend and cat delete and 165 t-stat and better plugs and wires and ported throttle bodie. i Have 2 friends with the exact mod list i have and their cars run just fine..

and if it was a hole in the piston wouldnt it be getting worse? its getting better just wont go all the way away.. when i changed the plugs and wires it got better, alot better but still does it at wot..

hmm lets see i know the signs of a hole in a piston and there would be oil usage, loss of compression big time, a big miss, might be faster actually.....=) clearly he dont have a hole. maybe just a chip... alot of people on here do not understand that the compressed air the charger makes, esp when you add more boost gets HOT! therefore we call in the weakest part to heat and that is the pistons. because this is happening at wot only we still cannot rule out compression loss from a chipped piston. when you think about your problem you are looking at alot of things, a miss normally would be from ignition, plugs, wires, ign control module, sometimes fuel, injectors, fuel pump, filter. sometimes we look at sensors, tps, maf, egr, o2, sometimes we look at the pcm. this one is different because the cyl missfire is number 4 going by the code. i just had a 99 gt na 3800 and it kept coming with a missfire cyl2 and i know it was more than just one cyl missfire by the way it sounded, it is a bad catalayic converter, cyl 2 must have been the one strongest to illuminate a ses light. as we know this car has a CAT DELETE, so we rule it out, my point is that even know there were other light missfires, the ses only pointed out 1. so i wont sit back and say for sure that this only happends on one cyl. i believe this one is going to be a rough one to find. i do wish you luck and hope that you do not have to tear the engine down b4 you find the issue, keep all of us posted.

well car is fixed and running great now.. i guess i managed to over tighten the spark plug and broke it so was causing the same problem again.

and as far as you guys saying i need more supporting mods for the 3.4 pully someone said i need to get a better downpipe, any suggestions on which one i should get to prevent further problems?

If i get the 3" down pip is that going to bolt where the old one did without getting different headers and stuff. Also what is going to be the benifit of getting the bigger down pipe without doing the rest of the exhaust?

zzp makes the best bolt in downpipe for quality, fit, and price. This would bolt right up in place of your current downpipe with no other mods. The biggest benefit is increased flow throughout this area of your exhaust.
