Msd coil packs advice

Ive been running MSD's for awhile

honestly i didnt notice a difference between stock & these.

But they do look nice... thats about it.

get headers.

umm you can get the tray through zzp, wbody store and 3800 performance. or make your own out of sheet metal or your imagination haha but no just zip tieing it wont make it prone to a alot of heat. mines just fine lol now between the airbox and the tb, do you mean the sensor on the tube?

Thanks buddy. Yes the sensor on the tube is what I was asking about.

Screw ZZP or 3800 Performance for PCM tray's...just go yank one out of a '96+ S10 or Blazer from a junkyard...your welcome :D

Sounds good well do that when it comes time to do the home built CAI! Is the two wire sensor on the rubber boot need for anything could one just put a cone filter right off the TB or is the boot and sensor needed?

Im weighing in on this debate once again i relayed this whole thread to my friend. Who is he? He has his ASEs A1-A8. And he attends Ranken Technical Colleges High Performance Racing program. Works for a performance shop here in STL. He said quote

"Dood OMG wtf. Stock coils are limited to a total of about 25k volts and MSD is up to 40k volts. My friend had a Grand Prix and a GTP, he put MSD coils on both of them and he said he noticed more pull in the higher rpm range which is true even in theory because the engine is traveling so fast that you need a really hot spark to get the fuel to start burning as soon as possible. And one of the reasons that guy is having a radom misfire is probably the crankshaft position sensor is got some metal dirt particals on it since it is externally mounted on those cars and the metal debris will interrupt the signal to the pcm causing a random misfire condition.

P.S. when you are putting a waste spark ignition coil on those cars you have to use that special lithium grease under the coil between the ignition module and the ignition coil so it keeps a good contact and keeps it cooler for better heat transfer and longer coil life."

---Were gona dyno in this all probably in the summer to get some #s and end the debate. I still have my stock coils and MSDs. Im running the MSDs and havent noticed anything wrong. Im not saying theres going to be an outrageous difference but I have a REALLY hard time believing that stock is better....

Robby, you can put the air filter right on the TB, just zip tie the sensor near the cone.(its you Air Intake Temp. sensor, or IAT)

And to the friend who is saying the MSD's are better.
In theory, only works in theory.
In theory, my car makes 1000HP, but in reality, it doesn't.
I've been through plenty of MSD coils now, and there is no difference, positive or negative, in performance. The only diffrerence is, the MSD coils have broken, split, and failed, whereas the stock coils havent.

The other thing to consider, look at the highest HP grand prixs around, they are still running stock coils.

Im not trying to call anyone out, or start ****, but from my experience, the MSD totally suck. They are good eye candy, but that's about it.

If your going through multiple coil packs, than theres an underlying problem. like when you blow a fuse, you can just keep replacing it or find out whats blowing it. relaying the message to my friend....
To the guy whos saying to use the factory ignition coils on higher boost is so wrong! Also tell him that from my experience and what I have proven on a dyno from working at a dyno shop for 3 years now that MSD will give you better top end performance and a smoother power curve! If your car is running sluggish with the MSD coil you might want to consider runner a colder spark plug and running the recommended spark plug wires to handle the higher output.

also most of the higher HP GPs are running turbo setups or completely different engine setups........apples to oranges

nobodys starting shhhh just a debate

MSD coils on these cars are NOTHING without the DIS box.

Proven.

Take your MSD crap to another platform where the factory ignition ISN'T better than aftermarket.

X2 MSD isnt needed untill your into the 500WHP range and then you need a DIS, And even the DIS has a huge failure rate. MSD told ZZP to buy two DIS boxs after they complained of failures lmao

Proven by multiple people who actually LOST power...and WHO ACTUALLY realized when their MSD coils broke in half, caused misfires, etc.

You'll realize it when your coils take a crap just like mine did, twice.

40k and im running just fine with them. actually i think they run better with them in there. ill see the dyno results this summer so it all really doesnt matter. Like i said if your blowing coil packs something elses gotta be wrong........

Quote from ZZP on msd's.....
Aftermarket coil packs
The stock ignition on a Grand Prix is very good. It is so good that we run stock coil packs on all of our cars at ZZP. Failure rate of stock coil packs is low and the spark output is extremely high. We have A/B dyno tested aftermarket coil packs and seen no difference in HP. We have seen many aftermarket units fail and when customers have a problem it's very hard to diagnose with extra unneeded mods on the car.
The ignition control module sits under the coil packs. It sends a limited current to the coils for a predetermined pulse (dwell). You cannot change the wires or the coils to get 'more spark' because the ignition control module will not send more power to the coils. You would have to change the ignition control module for a significant increase. The MSD coils and/or the MSD wires are a downgrade in your ignition system in regards to the 3800. The best you can do is run a wire with slightly less resistance or more insulation. These are very small improvements but the only meaningful ones.

ZZP dynoed already and came to the conclusion that it Didnt do CHIT, and spark is limited ICM.

my brain runs better when im drunk.

yall do whatever. All you guys are getting so angry when someone questions you im really not starting shhhh. btw what i do professionally and to my car are 2 different things. if we did half this crap at a dealership they wouldnt hire us. everyone has opinions and apparently you cant express them here o well. good luck fellas
