OK so to start off i love my 04 gp gt, im 16 and its my first car :) lol i don't count that pos truck i hit a deer with. so i drive like 50+ miles a day and i was wondering if there are any things i can do to the car to impove mpg,, ik ik keeping my foot out of the floor helps.

k thanks i will post numbers soon i just filled up yesterday and only got 23.8 combined for last week, would love to see that number at 26 lol i don't know if its possible living in the sticks like i do.
 


Should be able to get 26+ in mixed driving, and over 30 on highway/interstate. Exhaust helps quite a bit (headers flow the best) and so does a cheap intake.

For example: Going down a hill, neutral that **** up. Know there's a stop sign up ahead, neutral and coast. Don't accelerate hard. And most importantly, keep a STEADY foot. Even minor changes in throttle have an effect on mileage.

Bad idea on the neutral part.

Applying the forward band on and off like that is just going to make it wear faster and give it a better chance at becoming weak and breaking.

Depending on your speed the car will by itself go into a decel mode and pretty much shut off fuel, so just let the car do everything for you. And drive the posted limit.

Plugs, wires, air filter, new PCV, clean the throttle body and MAF sensor.

Normal stuff.

Keeping it in gear actually helps more with fuel mileage than dropping it in neutral. When decelling/engine braking the injectors shut down.

Also mid grade gas will not help with fuel mileage unless he is seeing knock. If he is not seeing knock midgrade will cause a reduction in fuel mileage.
 


Dropping it in neutral makes the RPMs rise a little bit not to mention all of the other issues that people posted. Get a tune up, possibly some flow mods, a tune if you have cash, and keep REAL light on the gas.
 


Any sort of intake will help. A simple 9" cone filter is the cheapest/easiest way. Then headers to get rid of the exhaust restrictions, and you should see quite a difference in mpg.
 
Going back to the original post, here are the big items to look at.​
  1. Spark plugs – if you are running on the stock plugs (and you probably are) it is time to change them. IMHO the best plug for you is the NGK OE laser iridium or the NGK iridium IX, the best part is once you change them you should never have to bother with them again.
  2. Front oxygen sensor-if your car has over 120k replace it. This is the most important fuel related sensor in your car. A slow/old O2 sensor can destroy your fuel economy.
  3. Don’t idle your car if at all possible. "Warming" your car up, drive-thrus, any idling eats up gas unnecessary. Just remember idling = zero mpg
  4. Proper tire pressure = the very minimum pressure you should ever run is 30psi, and even then only for track day. IMHO the best pressure to run for improved handling and mpg is ~33-35psi.
  5. Dead weight-get rid of anything in your car you don’t expect to use that day. And if you feel lucky that could mean your spare tire.
  6. Drive smooth and roughly the speed limit, use cruise when ever practicable, use the A/C when you need to otherwise crack a window.
