• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Movement in the other direction!

Hello all and thanks for this site. I have enjoyed my lurking around here for the last two weeks.

My lovely wife just bought a 08 GP GT and all is good except that the car will not go in to the garage. That is a long story having to due with the angle of our driveway and the entry to the garage.

The dealership was so desperate to sell the car they agreed to install rims and tires that would raise the car about an inch or just a bit more, to allow the lower facia to clear (the grey part not the black air dams they will have to be trimmed up about an inch as well) the step up into the garage.

To test the operation we took the rims and tires from an 08 Impala SS and tested going in to the garage. It cleared the facia but not by much( 1/4 inch). These tires were 235/50/18. Now I am thinking with the minimal clearance and tire wear, it would start hitting again in about a year or so. So using Miata's web site, I played around with tire sizes and I think 235/55/18 will give us the best option.

This will change the tire+rim overall diameter to 28.2 Inches up from 26.6. The rims we are going to get are the ASA AR9 with an offset of 42mm.

I know that the spedo will be off, that I will have to accept. But will this rim and tire combo fit?

Thanks in advance for all you help.

Is it out of the question to approach from a slight angle?? I personally wouldn't take a car with the speedometer off just so I can get it in the garage.

Sadly, we can not approach at a slight angle or alter the entry in any way. The drive way slopes downward at 31 degrees and the entry is the way it is for water runoff control.

Thanks

I would invest in a strong metal grate, allowing the runoff and letting you pull into the garage, the over-sized wheels will only help for so long, suspensions sag slowly, tires wear and change pressures, you will end up with the same proble again in a few years :(

I have looked into that but putting it in will cost over $4000 for the concrete work. Its the angle of the driveway that is the problem. I would have to decrease the angle 10 feet out from the entrance and then install the grate. That a hell of a lot work.

Funny thing is that the Sebring converatble we replaced with the GP went in fine and just a little scrape on the way out.

The dealer ship is ready to buy the rims and tires so I might as well get them. I mean hell why not.

Thanks
Gareth

Thanks If I knew how to post pics I would show you all my problem. I had a Lesabre T-type that I had to take the entire front facia off to pull it into the garage. I would back it in and my dual exausts would scrape!

Thanks
Gareth
