Looking at a '98 Regal GS...what should i do?

Aight guys im stuck in a bind here. I saw a post on craigslist of this nice '98 Regal GS and its got some work done to it. I want it! pont blank period. I test drove it this morning and i just love the blower whine and it pulls harddd. I popped the hood and the previous owner has some stuff done. Its got a Short ram intake, MSD coils, zzp wires, bright silver painted blower and alt., The pulley def looks smaller then a 3.8 id say its a 3.5 maybe, its got a boost and air/fuel gauge which looks cool. And i believe theres a few other lil things done..no headers though. Oh a magnaflow dual convert exhaust which sounds good. Its got 18's with low profiles and other exterior mods...its pretty sexy, forgot to take pics :th_angry2: . The interior is also in good condition. Now the bad..only the drivers window goes down, theres some roaring noise at higher speeds on the passenger side, and the biggest thing the mileage odometer has no display so cant tell the mileage which sucks but he said they can fix all that if i buy. Othwerwise thats it as far as i can see, feel or smell. Its very clean and quick and sounds amazing. The guy wants $5999 but after some talking and talked about trading my car i talked him to 5k, I honestly dont think its worth that much but oh well. He said he would take $2500 for my car, 1k down, so id owe around $1500, not bad. Now my car is an 01 GP GT with full bolt ons of course popped the hood and showed him.Told him i need suspension work roughly 1k worth of work, needs tires and i have an intake leak somewhere. Otherwise my car is good. I also have a top swap setup in the garage just collecting dust for now so should i sell that stuff to help with the funds? more important should i get this car or fix mine up and top swap whenever i can?

Re: ooking at a '98 Regal GS...what should i do?

windows are regulator or switch issues. Most likely regulators. $35 each off ebay I think
The roaring is likely a wheel bearing.
As for the mods, it doesn't sound that highly modded.

The mileage is an easy fix.

Whether it's worth that money..I dunno. Seems high to me. But without pics etc. Tough to say. I'd think an 01 GP is worth more on KBB. But that's only because most don't like Regals as much as GP's.

Re: ooking at a '98 Regal GS...what should i do?

Digital cluster and the resistors are bad..so the dealer doesn't know. Go on RegalGS and find out who traded that in. It's got a painted BMW lip spoiler on the back, the dual exhaust with painted SLP fascias, wheels, blacked out center tail section, different grill, smoked headlights, painted calipers. Someone on that forum knows this car. That color blue isn't common. Then find out the history of it and decide if you wanna buy it up for much less than $6k lol

Re: ooking at a '98 Regal GS...what should i do?

Ok ill see what i can do. I do wanna find out the mileage, thats most important.

Today went back and the dealer called up the previous owner and said the mileage is around 150k. But hes done a good amount to it and i could tell. Many things looked replaced and clean. The cash price is $3995 but the finance price is $5999. He did work with me a lil bit but after trade in and down payment id owe around $3000. Monthly payments would be low too which is good and he will have his mechanic fix the window regulators by tuesday. Hmm idk

Uh..Whut? He's gonna charge 2K more if it's financed, how much is the financing and is that the total paid after financing or is that before the finance costs?

Didn't go to RegalGS and ask around did ya?

just my 2 cents, but i would never buy a modded car, especially if i had no clue who owned it or what was done to it. and thats way to much for a 98 regal GS.

imo... get him down to 4999 financed..... 6000 for a car that has problems is already a red flag.. imo... if you trade yours try to get a few more dollars outta him.. around 2700 atleast.. i just haggle ppl til they meet me lol..

Go to your bank and get a used car loan and throw $3500 on the dealers desk. I bet he'll take it.

I did go to RegalGs Bill. Asked but only one response that got no real answer. Yea i know though the price is high im tryin to figure out why he's charging on the high side. Well im going back one final time next week friday once i have more money and see what can be done otherwise im gonna pass and work with my car. Going thru the photos in my head and how nicely it pulled i think it has a 3.5 pulley, intake, tune, msd coils, 10.3mm wires, TB spacer and possibly ported exhaust manis. I doubt any valvetrain work and internal work was done. I did notice some mini looking radiator thing sitting in the lower fascia area? FMHE possibly?

Or a trans cooler

Add taht to the list I already named off. Because it's got all that stuff. Go back to RGS and say...I sent you. Edit it and drop my name in the title of the thread. Or....send a pm to WildGS here. Dave owns that board and likely knows the car. Probably busy and hasn't bumped into this thread.

Dealers price is high because you are acting like a googly eyed kid that has never seen a Regal in his life. Ready to trade your car that is worth more for peanuts and add cash. Of couse he's going high on you.

If it's small, like just a bit bigger than a a piece of paper size, it's probably a transcooler.

As Bill said, Dealers can see when they have someone that wants something. If you want a good price, never act like you want it. Sad, but true.

I see. Guess i just got a bit too excited lol. When i go back ill play my game that got me my car now and see how this plays out. And it is more then likely a trans cooler, it wasnt huge a bit small. Thanks for the help though.
