Help Motor and Trans Swap

So its time to pull my 97 GTP off the road my strut towers are so rusted I don't feel safe driving it any more so today I bought a 2001 GT with no motor no trans but the body is flawless everything is in amazing shape
So heres the new project putting my motor and trany in this car is there anything I need to know or change because of the year differents also do I use the gtp pcm? is there anything else I need to take from the gtp? should this all pretty much be plug and play? any help or advice would be great

Motor and trans wise the assembly is nearly the same.

  • Swap the alternator and alternator bracket from the 02 onto the 97 drivetrain.
  • Use the 97 passenger side axle and the better of the driverside axles. (passenger side is shorter than the non-hd transmission)
  • You'll pull apart the 97's pcm connector to harvest the boost control soleniod wire to the pcm and you'll also cut off a chunk of the map sensor connector wiring.
  • Wire those two pieces in (if you have questions how to get the pins out fo the pcm connector or do the wiring, just ask) and your wiring harness is correct.
  • Consider how you want to deal with the fuel lines. They can be turned/bent and kinked to meet the new fuel rail, you can swap the lines or you can change them over to braided lines while the drivetrain is out.
  • Now have someone with DHP program the pcm with an 02 GTP bin file and your vin # from the 02 car. (Need this if you are in a state that plugs into the OBD2 port for inspection/emissions)
Drive and enjoy.

lol I am gunna have tons of questions I can tell but I will try and do as much research as I can before I start asking also the majority of the build will be after Halloween

As always Thank you very much Bill

The vin does not really need to be loaded, but it can be if you want.

You are also going to need to worry about the trans cooler lines, they are going to be different, I suggest putting the 97 radiator in the GT as it is pretty easy to do, and anything else is pretty tough.

Also, the 2002 GTP pcm is going to be looking for a 99-03 throttle body... Either tune in the correct throttle body settings, or get a 99-03 throttle body.

I suggest AGAINST putting the boost solenoid control in, and to just run the BBV in manual mode. The map sensor wiring will need to be swapped, but that is just 3 wires. You can avoid changing the wiring by using a series3 2bar map, as it plugs into the stock GT harness.

also, I have found that 02 PCM's do not like to operate the older transmissions. I do not have much specific information on this yet, but I have been having problems with it as of late.

In an OBD2 plug in state, you can't pass unless your vin matches the car's vin. It sucks. So yes..the vin shiould be updated IMO.

Trans cooler lines, good catch. Swapping the lines is possible as the click fittings at the radiator unscrew. The Sc car would be a thicker radiator typically, unless it's been replaced. So the rad swap makes the most sense.

The maf table isn't that much different, won't cause any issues. When the bin is updated, yes it should be corrected.

Scott..what's the reasoning behind not having the pcm control the bcs?

I have never scanned a car that ever commanded the BCS to turn on and limit boost... I would never go through that much effort to install something that the pcm never even used...

I also would never run a pre 99 TB on a 99+ file... The maf tables are quite different in the 7k+ area and it could cause some fairly rich wot conditions.

Ok I just wanna clear a few things up I was wrong when I put 02 its a 01 does that make any different?? second thing the only PCM I have is for the 97 GTP will that work
also I am in a state that doesn't do any type of emissions testing lol actually I had never even heard about that until I joined this forum haha I will be using the radiator out of the 97 also so the next thing for me to worry about is the trans cooler lines?? what will I need to do?

This is all I got in the 01 GT

If you want ac you'll have to put your lines on it if yours are ok. I'd put in the 97 coolant bottle if you want that so you aren't moving the coolant bottle everytime you work on your car.

can you explane this a little more pretend I am 3 lol I dont know much about this stuff

I'm putting a 99 GTP 3800 SC into a fiero, and was wondering if you live where you dont have to worry about emissions, what things can I remove to make my engine swap a little easier? I was planning on removing the AC, PS, ABS, BCS and evap stuff, but what else? I already have a guy that's going to reprogram my PCM afterward.

It appears you do not have the GT wiring harness... It looks chopped to bits.

I would say your BEST option is to get a GTP harness, but a 00.5+ GT harness (with the ev1 injector clips) would work in a pinch.

The 97 wiring and computer stuff you have would be more work than it is worth to install.

Just dont put the solenoid on, leave the bottom port of the valve open to air, and run the top part to the top of the blower.

I will be using the radiator out of the 97 also so the next thing for me to worry about is the trans cooler lines

97 trans, 97 cooler lines, 97 radiator = all good.

For a fiero swap you do not have to do much of anything to stay somewhat emissions compliant. Evap does not offer any exhaust emissions benifit, but if you are staying with a simple swap, you can probably leave the EGR functional.

So I'm parting out the rest of the car if anyone is interested. It's a 99 GTP in excellent condition. Send me a message if you want something off of it

Power...please go start your own for sale thread with all the necessary info. You will do much better with selling it there.

Ok. The 01 makes no difference. You'll want a pcm for the year of the car you are putting it into with an L67 bin file, with the info Scott (DH) and I were talking about at the top of the thread filled in.

On the boost control, I say run it, he says don't. Either of the two ways will work well.

Looks like you'll want to pull the ac compressor and some of the hoses out of your old one as well. I'd put in new seals ($5) and lay the compressor on the subframe in the front. Same with the power steering. (except put it by by the rear pass side.

When you lower the new drivetrain in.. keep an eye on both of them and if you can..hook them to the motor as you are almost all the way in. Usually I find it's easier that way.

The 97 pcm has different wiring/pinouts than the 01/02 that you are dropping into. Stick to the newer wiring and you'll be fine.
