Hard cranking with new battery?

Hi guys!

Just put a new battery in my car and now its cranking hard...I've never had this problem before... A a couple of days ago I drove through some pretty big puddles (small rivers!) I have a '98 GT...Never had a problem, suddenly the battery is shot and this hard starting. The guy a Advanced tested everything when he put the new battery in and said the starter and alt. were doing there jobs. Just a side note on the way home the a/c started blowing hot on the passenger side only. Should I be worried about electrical problems?
 


Have you cleaned the battery terminals and the wires at the starter? Almost sounds like a dirty/bad ground somewhere.

On the hot air from the pass. side sounds like a blend door actuator. This is mounted on the passenger side of the airbox. IIRC you have to remove the glovebox and you can see/remove it from there.
 
Just to clarify the A/C is blowing cold on drivers side and hot on passenger at the same time... pass duel control is at lowest temp. Should I still be checking the door actuator? As to battery terminals, yes cleaned. Will have to check starter wires.

IIRC= If I recall correctly.

What happens if you move the pass. side climate control to hot? Do you hear clicking?

If the hard starting turns into no starting, the first thing I would check is the in-line fuse. Good luck
 


sometimes when you take the battery off the blend door actuators get confused. try taking the battery off for 20 minutes or so, hook it back up turn the key to run hit auto on the climate control, with any luck it will fix its self, if you listen closly some times you can hear then turning back and fourth.

worst comes to worst you need a new actuator from the pass side, you can also take it off and just turn the small knob to cold till you get a new one.

Thanks for the info, I've tried taking the positive cable off for 1/2 hr, that didn't work, then left the neg off over night, that didn't work. One guy said it make 2-3 times with positive off and on. I guess I'll try that before I attempt the door!!! Been awhile since I tore a dash apart! lol I know its not the dash, but close enough!
 
all you need to do is take the glove box out, take the foot cover, insulator off, should be 3 push tree sty pins. pull them out drop that cover, then take 4 small bolts out, looks like a piano hinge, then open and remove the glove box, that easy. the actuator look to the left side in the glove box hole.

So the battery cable disconnection hasn't done the trick 30, 15 30 no go. So I'm looking at the door..it was open to start off with, I pulled it shut and the air is still hot, so your saying to remove it completely and turn what small knob? for the cold air, till I can replace it? Will look at directions on removal again and go attempt that. Should the battery be disconnected for any of this?
 
this is the glove box side, the black box thats not attatched is the actuator, follow the line thats the little knob you need to turn.

1. Remove the right instrument panel insulator. (The carpeted cardboard piece below the glovebox)

2. Remove the instrument panel compartment. (glovebox)

3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the temperature actuator.

4. Remove the HVAC Con (HVAC Control) MiniFuse #27 from the IP electrical center.

5. Remove the bolts retaining the temperature actuator.

6. Remove the temperature actuator.
 


Do you know if the door should be open or closed? It doesn't seem to matter:th_scratchhead:
Maybe it's not the actuator? I'm soooo looking for some success!
 
off hand i dont recall witch way is hot or cold, but if you turn the a/c on high, wait for it to get cold, turn the knob, turn it one way if hot air comes out, turn it the other way, cold should come out.

it only moves a small amount, you can feel a door shut when you turn it.

So it's not that big door right in front of my eyes? There's another door somewhere...very interesting
 
no thats not it. thats the recirculate door. lets fresh air in. look to your left, use a flash light in broad day light it helps, its dark in there.

the black box thing you see not hooked up to anything, with the line to the hvac part in this pic. follow the line, that the little knob, its white. take the actuator off and turn the knob.
