Handling in the snow

So I was wondering does the car handle in the snow based on the tires alone or is there other things I can do/check/upgrade to get better handling?
 


I have Winter X-ice snow tires on the front of my 2000 GTP. I think it does QUITE WELL!

I am able to swing the rear of the car out with the flip of the wrist.... or go through tons of snow.

My opinion.... it is all in the tires.
 
i cant start from a dead stop without spinning my tires a little. i just turn the traction control off and have at it.
 


Usually if I just turn t/c off and drop it in second and nudge my way out and it works... Sometimes you just dig yourself in if you floor it without any momentum. If I cant nudge my way out, I start going back and forth until I break free.

These cars can get the front wheels to spin pretty good on dry pavement, so just learn to ease into or blip the throttle and ease back steadily when you feel the tires break loose.
 
For me I dont seem to have a problem at all getting grip and I have some ****!y tires on.I guess you guy just have heavy foots!!! j/k I think that the deep deep frezze that we are having helps getting grip to.The warmer weather does get a little bit more slick.
 


The 2008 GXP is the worst handling vehicle I've ever driven in the snow. Even with front wheel drive the extra wide tires recommended for the car are horrible. I actually bought new all season Eagles shortly after purchasing the vehicle, but still get horrible traction. I threw 4 sandbags in the trunk which seemed to stabilize the vehicle overall, but this is still one better left in the garage in bad weather. With the standard front wheels of 18" X 8" and rear wheels of 18" X 7", and a recommended tire size of 255-45-18 front and 225-50-18 on the rear, I'd have a better chance of floating on water then getting traction in the snow. I tried to downsize my wheels and tires to something narrower, but couldn't come up with anything with the same wheel diameter. With the computerization I think I'd be alright as long the finished tire heighth was the same. I would sure take any tips or advice on where to go from here.
 
if you want to keep your same size wheels you should probably get Blizzaks... they are supposed to be really good tires for driving in the snow
