GTP broke down

yesterday driving down a 45 MPH road the car started sputtering. (like it was running out of gas). Now, the computer screen deal told me that It was low, but I did not have the low fuel light on the dash, and the gauge was between an 1/8th and the orange. it finally stalled and i coasted into a parking lot next to a walmart station. I cranked it and pumped that gas as it tried to fire and was able to get it running. drove over to the walmart station, and got to the pump and it seemed to be running ok. I filled it up, and i died during the pumping. I then started it and it jumped around a little, but eventually came out of it and seemed to be fine.

huh, ok? that was weird but I guess the car learned a new trick?

we drove to a store and then headed home. 3 miles from home it did it again. crap. tried to start. it cranks hard and then fires for just a second and dies. trying to give it gas does nothing.

I hear pump running. So wife tows me home with the suburban. I put fuel gauge on it. says 50 lbs. and stays up there when trying to start etc.

I was thinking fuel filter, but would I have good pressure?

99gpgtp (I think is his name) recommended unplugging maf and trying it. I have not done that yet. working now, and battery was to low to crank last night (and had to take the boy trick or treating)... Ill try when I get home (on charger overnight).

the FP relay 85 pin has already been bent out. ideas for what to do next? if the maf dont work?

Re: gtp brolke down

I agree with Mike.. sounds fueling related. Likely a MAF. If not..check for spark.

Think about how old the plugs and wires might be.

not sure how old the plug wires are.

just got home. Gonna eat and go close out and then check into it a bit... Ill let ya know shortly.

good excuse to check out my new inline spark checker! :)

OK, tried to start it when I first got home. didnt want to start.

unplugged the MAF (assumings its the plug right on top of the TB on these)... and it started up. rpms fluctuated and it started sucking more air, but stabilized around 1k, and kept running. Then I plugged in maf. it got all stupid and stalled. unplugged and started it and seemed fine. shut it off then plugged in maf. started it and seemed fine. shut it off, and started again. seemed fine then after a minute or so started getting stupid and stalled.

unplugged maf and now the car is running in the garage (as I type this I can hear it)...

SO, now what? clean it? replace it? what is the appropriate action for these things now? I think on my chevy trucks there is a heating element in them that burns out or something like that (if I remember right) and have to use contact cleaner? (if this ones cleanable?)

Im so sorry to hear that. My condolances go out to you. Gas fumes can be dangerous.

But I agree with replacing of the maf if you cant clean it and get it to work.

ok, after thinking about it. the car had a dirty A$$ K&N in it... I took it off built my own intake for it and put a new cone filter (brand new) on it... a week ago.

less than 100 miles ago... wonder if I might get lucky and just take it out and clean it!? I guess Ill try that first (this afternoon). just read another maf thread and started thinking about that.

really kinda beside myself right now.

I am so damned annoyed with EVERYTHING...

crawl under the car to see what PITA the AC compressor is gonna be. well its not to bad. but then I realize that the new axle I put in on the passenger side is slinging its grease all over the place. well good thing I saw that before I left for michigan. would have been broke down half way. cv axles dont go far without grease. great. more work.

then I get the ac comressor out. pull out the new one (out of the box), and the damn thing looks right, but the mount for the AC line is bolt instead of a nut... mine has a 2 inch stud sticking off it... this one is just threaded. the bolt it came with is like 1/2inch long. NO WAY it can get through the aluminim block on the line to hold the damn thing on. then I thought well maybe my stud threads out. NOPE... CRAP. gotta run back into town, and waste another 15 bucks in fuel to get the right damn thing. and tell them about the axle that is leaking. that I am not messing with today.

I did get the new battery installed, and the new MAF sensor. which the idiot at the store had no clue how to even look for it. He goes MAP sensor? NO idiot. MAF... MAS AIR FLOW. then he goes oh, a MASS. NO jack wagon. MAF. MAS AIR FLOW sesnor.

type in MAF.

he cant find it... says they dont have em and dont carry em. So I pull up his advance auto.com, and pull up his store and pull up the part and it shows in stock... HUMMM... then he takes the part number off my phone, and goes and gets the part and brings it up and scans it in...

MORONS... had about all I can have for the day. thats what I get for not taking the AC compressor OFF the car first and taking it with me.

THEN, you know how when you are already PI$$ed. and then the little annoying things around the house dont bug you? well, they are no bugging the **** out of me... need to drink a beer and chill out for a few minutes.

ok, so...

went up there and got everything taken care of.

drank a 6 pack. all is better.

new belts/new AC compressor/new dryer/new orphice tube/new MAF/new battery. 637 dollars later. I now have working AC, and no more screaching from engine bay, and the car will run with maf (runs much smoother). system sounds smoother to (weak battery)... yes did it all myself. I am good like that.

anyway. all and all. not a bad day. 6 pack chilled me out. and I was able to get stuff done.

NOW, we are headed to chillis! SWEET! (more beer) its 85 degrees so we get to use the dual climate control WITH AC! :)

This is the beauty of ordering online and picking it up in the store. Just go in show your id and a copy of the e-mail and forget about dealing with them. Just make sure to bring in the old parts to compare with before you leave the store.

well ****.

another 200 bucks down. brakes started grinding today. sounds like inner pad came apart and is scraping steel.

rotors are pretty rusty and have been turned before. So new rotors, and new wagner thermo quiets... thinking about installing them. just not super motivated. dont feel like working on this thing again today. and I need to put one of my old axles back in (passenger side). the PITA side. because the one oriellys sold me its slinging grease everywhere. they did a horrible job crimping the boot. :(

my passenger side axle looked and felt pretty good. gonna put it back in and go exchange the new one for a good one, and put it on a shelf. atleast i will have it laying around.

why dont you just throw a hand full of grease into the boot and re-band it. They sell the replacement boot bands at 99% of the parts stores out there. You can use a hose clamp in the mean time to secure it. Been there done that.
