g/f's V6 Camaro is whoopin me

Okay, so im not ashamed to lose to my girl by any means, she's amazing and her Camaro is tha sh*t. But...the problem is its a stock V6 camaro, no mods so far other than a few drivability things (cleaned the 80K TB, seafoam, etc.) and she's puttin my GP to shame. You can see the mods i have in my sig. Im just confused as to why an 80+K mile series II 3800 Camaro can beat a 28K 3800 series III 05 GP WITH top end mods? I know there are a lot of factors to consider, such as driver error/timing, gearing, mph when the "race" was iniated, etc. But every time we've run i have been dead even with her front bumper from the start and by the end of the "run" she's pulled a carlength and a half on me. We usually go from a 40mph roll, i mash it and go WOT and stay even with her until it shifts again (dunno if that would be the upshift or downshift, im still a n00b to shifting lingo) and then my RPM kinda hangs around 4500 and SLOWLY gets to 5600 as she's pulling away from me. I mean, it's not like a massacre or anything, i stay within a car length the whole time, maybe it's just timing?...Or maybe i need a PCM to raise my shift points? Any input guys? Sorry if this belongs in the Kills section, but i figured since i wasnt the one doing the killing this section may be more appropriate

^ thanks Sabre. would RWD vs FWD make any difference? Also, im running with an SES light on because of the o/r DP, would that affect anything?? Ive also heard about "Torque Abuse Mode" or something, whats the deal with that??

gett a GTP and your problem is solved i killd my buddies v6 96 camaro with a full exhaust system from borla

RWD vs FWD only makes a difference on the launch. If no tires were spinning or anything it makes no difference. SES light for a DP won't change anything. Torque abuse on the 04+ GPs is fairly heavy I hear, but I don't have any first hand experience with it.

:th_laugh-pointup: ...says my wallet. I know, i know, but im not so sure how forced induction will afffect driveabilility or the reliability of my car. I have the n/a 3800 with a higher compression, iirc, and supercharging a high compression engine, if you dont know what youre doing, can make it go BOOM. And I dont know what im doing when it comes to that, lol. And then you have to switch out the fuel rails and injectors, get a new PCM and UIM, etc. Believe me, i would LOVE to have a Gen V s/c, even an M90, but until then im gonna try to squeeze every ounce of power (or lack thereof) from this n/a..."you gotta pay if you wanna play" i guess....

right, right. lol, i actually meant to write Gen III rather than M90 but my fingers type faster than my brain thinks. i had the right idea though. So is there really anything more i can do with n/a before going supercharged? Maybe some 1.9's or a cam i guess?

Nope, no wheel spin. Went from a roll, so no such luck. I know you said you dont have much experience with it, but do you think Torque Abuse mode would be an all-the-time thing or just when someone goes WOT from a stop or if there is excessive wheel spin?

Torque abuse is any time the PCM feels the engine is making more torque than is safe for the transmission given certain conditions.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the 04+ GP N/A w/ the 3800 series III came with 2.93 gears verses the 3.29 gears the 97-03 GP GTs had. My dad rented an 05 GT once for a trip. It was noticeable slower than his 00 GP GT. I read that somewhere once, the newer GTs came with different gearing. I know that 05 he rented felt like a different car as far as stall and gears go. We never lined up both cars but theres no doubt my dads car would of beat it in at least the 1/4 mile. My dad couldn't believe the difference.

That maybe whats killing you, your gearing. Or maybe the torque management on an 04+ is really that ****ty and slows down the car? I donno, a done up PCM from Overkill maybe a very wise investment for you. You do have a heavier car than that Camaro so that doesn't help things either.

isn't it for every 10lbs of weight you shed you pick up a tenth of a second in the 1/4 mile? or something like that...anyway, shedding weight isn't in the forecast anytime soon, and ive DEFINITELY been considering the aftermarket PCM route. But this is the second mention ive heard of an Overkill PCM for the 04+ GPs, is this the only company that does 04 and up? And isnt this a Canadian company? Not that i have anything against Canada or Will, they're both great, just curious...:th_thumbsup-wink: Also, tell me more about this gearing dilemma i seem to be having. is there any way to swap out gears or is it a serious internal transmission or differential mod? Thanks for the help guys, youre an asset to n00bs everywhere

You'd have to swap differentials (and more depending on how you do it) as well as get your PCM programmed for the right ratio.

You should get that PCM and some more upgrades. Until then...

"You're slower than your car..." :p

Sincerely,

The g/f "whoopin'" you.

Seriously, my primary guess for the multiple kills is weight difference. Then I'm going to factor in your crazy factory PCM tactics, like "Torque Abuse Mode" and "Torque Management" or whatever way GM tries to tie down a decent sedan from putting out some power. If his '05 GP does have 2.93 gearing, then he's not far off from my open differential "one tire fire" 3.08 gearing. Of course, those combined could be just enough to make that 1 to 1 1/2 car length lead.

Anywho... good luck when some of the mods start going into my car. ;)

ever weigh a 4th gen camaro, they are way heavy (heaviest f body by a large margin even in v6 form)

Oh yeah. I'm well aware that my 3300lb boat is not light in any way. But if we're going to be technical about it, there are still other factors including extra weight (i.e. driver, gas, extra junk in the car) that make his total weight at least 150lbs more than mine. At least from what I've heard stock '05 Grand Prix typically weigh (~3,47x lbs?).
