I've read some stories about Fram filters. I found a story about a guy who cut every manufacturers oil filters open and analyzed the construction of each one.
He cited the cardboard end caps and cheap filtering media of the Frams.
I worked at NAPA when I was in college and we had some cut opened filters to show the difference between NAPA's filters (made by Wix) and the others.
Economically, a Wix filter is a only a couple of dollars more than a Fram, Quaker State (a Fram), and other low buck oil filters. It's worth the money to buy a NAPA Gold, Wix, a Purolator oil filter. You can buy the $5/quart motor oil and run a cheap filter and not get ahead. You're better off running a good filter, a name brand motor oil with the starburst symbol, and change your oil between 3,000-4,000 miles and you'll be better off.
